Seminar Reminder: Thursday @ 3pm - Xuan Li
Seminar Schedule Next Seminar: October 24rd, Xuan Li (PhD Defense Practice) "Improved Detection Techniques for Foodborne Pathogens: Separation Techniques Using Crossflow Microfiltration" Separating and concentrating microorganisms in foods have been suggested as an alternative to enrichment culture as a pre-analytical step of detection in accordance with the need of a truly real-time technique for foodborne pathogen detection. Direct concentrating and recovering cells from food matrices is difficult due to the heterogeneous nature of foods and there is a lack of method to cope with this difficulty. As a remedy to this problem, this work proposed a new protocol which includes sampling from food by homogenizing, enzymatic pretreatment of crude food homogenates, pre-filtration, and cell concentration and recovery using a cell concentration instrument. The principle of instrument is to process the food samples by microfiltration in a cross-flow mode to concentrate the sample to a small volume, increasing the concentration of microbial cells to a detectable level so that they may be effectively probed for the presence of pathogens. In addition, a mathematical model is developed to clarify the fouling process and to provide insight into the optimization of membrane design, operational conditions and cleaning procedures. All LORRE graduate students are expected to attend.
