READ THOROUGHLY Mandatory Chemical Packing Day - Instructions
Please arrive promptly at 9am, as scheduled with appropriate PPE (face masks, lab coats, nitrile gloves & safety glasses). Bring your face shield in case you are unable to distance more than 6ft. Use the following procedures to prepare your chemicals. This applies to Room Temperature storage only. Fridge and freezer contents will be moved Wed Dec 2, tentatively. Segregate the chemicals to be moved by hazard (e.g. flammables away from oxidizers; acids away from bases; reactives and organic peroxides packaged alone; etc.- if an acid bin is segregated from other acids under the fume hood, it should be boxed completely separate as well). If you are unsure of the hazards, consult the safety data sheets (SDS) on the LORREdoc drive or Chemical Segregation from pg 34 & 35 of CHP. OPEN ALL CABINETS AND DRAWERS to look for hidden chemicals unless it is labeled as empty- this includes under sinks (i.e. bleach, Alconox, household chemicals, etc), flammable cabinets (REM has authorized us to unpack flam cabinets and store their segregated boxes until they move), fume hoods (acids, bases, Emma's vegetable oil, pH buffer solutions) and shelving. Ensure bottles are properly closed with tight-fitting lids (do not use Parafilm(r), corks, or rubber stoppers). Package the segregated chemicals you want moved into sturdy cardboard boxes or buckets so they will not fall over or bump into one another and break. Use the original boxes provided by the moving company with the stamp on the face of the box. Attached are two photos of how to label the box so we know the contents and it is obvious to REM what to move (i.e. the yellow tape in the corner- do not use another color of tape unless yellow has depleted). Minimize rattling with packing material. 5-gallon or larger containers do not need to be packaged but they do need to be labeled so that it is obvious you want them moved (i.e. bio mass buckets-apply a 2 inch strip of yellow tape). Pack 4 Liter bottles in the style of their original shipping box if there are enough (photos attached). I have collected some on top of the 333 flammable cabinet. If Victoria can collect more today, I will have her place them in the same location. Use permanent marker to cover up labels on this box. Label boxes and buckets with descriptions concurrent with the hazard class (e.g. "Organic Solvents", "Toxic Solids", "Water-Reactives", etc.) of the chemicals they contain. Write this Hazard ON THE YELLOW TAPE, at the UPPER LEFT corner of the face of the box. Please write ABE 4107 on all boxes, project/use, what POTR room they were packed and your name as designated in the example attachment. You should consider writing specific chemicals on the OTHER side of the box so that you can easily find them later. Gas cylinders- Disconnect, label, cap. SHUT OFF the main valve. Release any pressure in the regulator. Disconnect tubing and regulator. Label both. Cap the gas cylinder. If for any reason it is not nearby, there are spares in B038 at the top of the white cabinet at the room's entry. Package the regulator. If you are personally done generating waste, use this time TODAY-Tues aka Weekly Seminar- to secure the waste and submit the Haz Waste pickup form by room number. Hazardous Waste will NOT be moved. You are personally responsible for submitting any hazardous waste left behind in POTR at any time but especially after today. Think ahead to generating waste at the new location. Do you have an empty container with lid to begin generating new waste and has it been boxed up with an obvious label so that you can easily identify it when needed in December? Assigned locations below but please just be respectful of your peers and stay until the tasks are completed throughout POTR. No one should be leaving if others are still working on this and I think it's reasonable to complete this in under two hours. 231- Xueli and Shen 233/252- Antonio and Pablo 235-Jessica and Fernanda 237/254/256- Diana and Antonio (for 5 gal buckets) 333- Akash and Elena 335- Jessica and Fernanda 336- Elena and Pablo (start here then proceed to other spaces) 359-Brent or Louis (to ensure Kilaz's chemicals stay behind) & Jenny, Elena and Ladisch (to determine what gets packed under fume hood) - upper cabinets, under fume hood, Abby chemicals in lower cabinets in desiccator B038, 138- Jenny (bring calcium carbonate to 333, look for anything in 138 then proceed to 359) I appreciate your teamwork with this task. I cannot express enough that all spaces be checked thoroughly and by all participants. Things are stored in more places than we realize. I hope that I addressed 99% of the questions related to packing chemicals in this email. I would much rather be working in POTR during this crucial time than being quarantined with my laptop. My cell phone is 2173046134. Text pics with questions. Lindsey
