Reminder: The next LORRE seminar will be Wednesday November 1, 2017 at 3:30pm in the Fu Room (POTR 234).

We have guests from the National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center (NCERC) providing seminars this week. All graduate students are expected to attend this special opportunity. NCERC has hired LORRE alumni in the past for post-doc positions. Short bios of our guests are below:

Dr. Yan Zhang, Director of Research at NCERC of SIUE, received her Ph.D in analytical chemistry from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Twenty years of experience working in environmental science, biofuels, and pharmaceutical industry, provide her an indispensable foundation to understand and quantify the myriads of biochemical conversions occurred during the production of biofuels. After seven years working as an environmental scientist at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Yan joined NCERC in 2003 and has been a lead researcher on projects for groups such as the Illinois Corn Growers Association, Renewable Fuels Association, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the U.S. Grains Council. Yan spearheaded the nutritional profiling of DDGS for the animal feed industry, and helped NCERC to attract numerous client projects to utilize the pilot plant and laboratory facilities to conduct research on biofuels. She was invited to speak at national and international biofuel meetings to present the projects related to nutrients and risk factors in DDGS. Between 2012 and 2017, Yan had a five-year hiatus to be employed as a Senior Analytical Chemist at Mallinckrodt, a biopharmaceutical company in St. Louis.

Jacqueline Pohlman is a recent graduate of the Masters of Business Administration program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Prior to graduation, she worked as a marketing specialist for the Building Illinois’ Bioeconomy Consortium which provides educational programs and hands-on training opportunities for students in the Midwest pursuing careers in the bioeconomy. Now, Jackie works full time at the National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center, a training center featured in the Consortium, as the Specialist of Commercialization and continues to work directly with BIB programs. Jackie earned her undergraduate degree in Public Relations from Quincy University and has a background in strategic communications, public relations, project management, marketing, and community relations.

Dr. Kevin Tucker received his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign under the supervision of Prof. Jonathan Sweedler. After five years as a Mass Spectrometrist, he moved to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry. Dr. Tucker’s research lies at the nexus of analytical and environmental chemistry as he pursues pharmaceuticals in their journey through the environment using field research and laboratory modeling.
