A Reminder of the I2D Meeting - Thursday Next: [cid:image002.png@01D225FE.A2156E00] BI-MONTHLY MEETINGS REMINDER Colleagues, The Innovation for International Development Lab (I2D Lab) under the Office of Global Engineering Programs (GEP) aims to foster a vibrant community of faculty, staff, and students working with international partners to address grand challenges in international development based on engineering innovations and market-driven approaches. This includes research, design, adaptation, and field-testing of appropriate technologies and services that have strong potential to become scalable solutions for energy access, healthcare, water and sanitation, labor-saving innovations, and disaster/humanitarian response. Our two presentations are from faculty/grad student teams that have really made hay from their projects, in terms of funding and interest well beyond our kick-start I2D support : 1) Yuehwern Yih (IE) and grad student Dawei Wang: IT Platform for Supply Chain and Logistics Management in Humanitarian Response The efficiency of humanitarian aid supply chains is critical to effective emergency response. In addition, a sustainable supply chain network facilitates the rapid recovery of devastated areas and provides relief for the affected populations. Thus, an efficient, reliable and sustainable emergency supply chain management system plays a critical role in the humanitarian relief operations. Currently, a typical NGO ERP (enterprise resource planning) system does not address the specific needs of emergency humanitarian relief functions. Without an emergency supply chain management system, the lack of coordination and potential human errors will cause unnecessary delays and wastes in resources, which jeopardizes the safety, and sometimes survival, of affected people. In addition, tracking relief materials from donor resources all the way to distribution to target beneficiaries is important for accountability and transparency. In this project, Purdue University and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) are co-designing a web-based, multi-platform, centralized, offline-compatible electrical emergency response system. This system is capable of connecting all global warehouses across different country programs, requesting and approving relief materials, checking inventory levels, tracking relief materials from donors to beneficiaries, and automatically generating accounting and beneficiary reports. This application will help NGOs form efficient, reliable and sustainable distribution plans for emergency responses with the most updated information. 2) Jennifer DeBoer and grad student Dhinesh Radhakrishnan: Engineering Skills Curriculum and Digital Materials for Out-of-School Youth Dr. DeBoer and her team work with out-of-school youth the Tumaini Center in Eldoret, Kenya to apply best practices and research in engineering education to benefit the learners The youth learn engineering concepts on Google Tablets, and then they apply then in hands-on projects such as in the building of a solar powered water pump. For the current funding year, the Deboer Lab Team and their partners look forward to piloting 8 weeks of modules, which build skills that contribute towards employability for the homeless youth. The modules will address the following learning objectives: STEM fundamentals, professional competence, problem-solving, modeling, and problem-solving processes, design and design process. Dr. DeBoer and her students seek to 'cross-pollinate' with other I2D projects in areas of formal curriculum (e.g., science, math), as well as to scale up for demand from collaborators working on conflict zones.
