I2D-list Innovation / Innovator Showcase Opportunities
Dear Colleagues, Beyond the I2D Expo (with posters due to Andrea by this Friday please!), we wanted to share several more opportunities to showcase your innovations: * Deadline extended to ??: Smithsonian's Earth Optimism Summit, "Make for the Planet", a partnership of the Smithsonian Institution and Conservation X Labs, Apr 21 - 23, DC<https://www.makefortheplanet.com/> o [This is more about you as an innovator than your specific innovation, which could be used as proof of your abilities.] o Conservation-X Labs<http://conservationxlabs.com/> and the Smithsonian are hosting Make For The Planet<https://www.makefortheplanet.com/>, with application instructions here<https://www.makefortheplanet.com/participate>. o If you are you a hacker, coder, maker, engineer, designer, entrepreneur, creative thinker or tinkerer, come celebrate Earth Day weekend 2017 by creating solutions to challenging conservation problems in front of a global audience! Multidisciplinary teams will compete in an on-site event called Make for the Planet over three days of the Smithsonian Institution's Earth Optimism Summit in Washington, D.C. (April 21-23, 2017). Teams will have access to a pop-up maker's space with equipment to create prototypes and models of hardware and/or software solutions to specific conservation problem. Space and registration is limited! Submit an application for your team by March 1st, 11:59 PM EST [I assume the deadline is extended!]. o Team competition/hackathon to create hardware and/or software solutions to specific conservation challenges. Teams will also have access to a pop-up maker's space with 3D printers, controllers, sensors, model-making software, and other equipment o Conservation X Labs will send teams a set of predefined conservation challenges two weeks before the event (Friday, April 7th) and global conservation experts will pitch the problems in Washington, D.C. on Friday, April 21st to kick-off the event. Teams will have until the morning of April 23rd to create solutions for display in a science-fair setting for viewing by judges, the public, and other Smithsonian Earth Optimism attendees. Solutions must be presented as a physical or digital representation and more than a written explanation or pitch. We expect teams to create solutions for one of the proposed conservation challenges using the equipment provided on-site over rather than bringing a pre-baked solution. * Deadline March 15: ASME ISHOW Innovation Showcase in DC, Kenya, or India<https://thisishardware.org/current-competitions/#11> o [Note mechanical engineering is very broad, so your innovations likely fit!] o The ASME ISHOW is a global competition for "hardware led social innovation" - that is, for innovators creating physical products that will have a positive social, economic or environmental impact. Finalists will be invited to our showcase events in India, Kenya and the USA to pitch their prototypes to industry experts and investors. o Winners share $500,000 in seed grants and technical assistance - including an ASME ISHOW Hardware Review delivered by industry experts. We work with an extensive list of partners to ensure social entrepreneurs get the right advice and support to take their hardware from prototype to market. * Deadline March 21: United Nations (UN) 2nd Annual Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the SDGs (STI Forum), May 15-16, NYC<http://eepurl.com/cD4eHn> o The focus for this year are the six SDGs below, and a special emphasis will be placed in learning about those innovations where the Internet may have played a significant role in knowledge sharing and technology transfer. [#1 No poverty, #2 zero hunger, #3 good health and well-being, #5 gender equality, #9 industry innovation and infrastructure, #14 life below water] o Subject to availability of funding, representatives of the selected innovations will be invited to participate in the STI Forum 2017, and exhibit their innovations at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 15 and 16 May 2017. o If you have an existing innovation profile on the Exchange, then please update your profile following these steps... * Deadline April 7: IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC), October 19-22, San Jose<http://eepurl.com/cBPwMb> o [Though hosted by IEEE, discipline really doesn't matter. This is one of very few development tech conferences. I have participated for years, and an I2D grantee presented last year. Publishing a refereed conference article is encouraged but optional.] o Now in its 7th year, GHTC is the flagship IEEE Conference focusing on innovation, deployment and adaptation of Technology for Humanitarian Goals and Sustainable Development. GHTC invites presenters to showcase innovation and progress in technology and methodology addressing the socio-cultural and socio-economic needs of vulnerable and resource-constrained end-user communities in developing and developed countries, as well as confronting the challenges of both natural and man-made disasters. o Authors and Presenters must demonstrate a clear understanding of the interrelationship of their work with socio-cultural, socio-economic, policy and environmental factors, and clearly state preliminary, final or expected results and impact. Proposals for Interactive Sessions [Panels, Case Studies, and Workshops] should be designed to stimulate dialogue, knowledge exchange and the co-design of ideas, concepts and implementation plans by conference attendees.
