Dear All,

We are pleased to invite you to a seminar by a GEP visitor exploring collaboration: SK Saha, Naren Gupta Chair Professor and Head Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD). He leads the Government of India supported Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG) at IITD, and has research interests in robotics and STEM Education.

Entitled R2: Robotics to Rural - Inclusive Education in Engineering, it takes place Thursday June 7, 10A - 11A, and we appreciate the ME Department's hosting of the event. Details are attached and below.

He is also recruiting graduate students for faculty positions at IITD so, even more than usual, graduate students should consider attending.

If you would like to meet with him on June 7 outside the seminar, there may be availability. Just reply-all to Andrea and Tami to explore details.

Best,

   Alex

SEMINAR

Professor Subir Kumar Saha

Naren Gupta Chair Professor and Head

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD)

R2: Robotics to Rural - Inclusive Education in Engineering

Abstract: The presentation will first introduce the Prof. Saha's areas of research, i.e., Robotics and Multibody Dynamics. He will then introduce a concept called RoCK-BEE (Robotics Competition Knowledge-based Education in Engineering) for innovative learning and teaching methodology, mainly, to the undergraduate students. Later, it will be shown that how the knowledge of robotics can be applied/extended for the design optimization of many devices and processes used by the rural people of India or the World, e.g., a carpet loom or a machine to clean it. This aspect is pursued by Prof. Saha under the banner called MuDRA or Multibody Dynamics for Rural Applications.

Bio:
Prof. Subir Kumar Saha is the Naren Gupta Chair Professor and Head for the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Delhi (IITD). He also leads the Government of India supported Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG, rutag.iitd.ac.in) at IITD. Prof. Saha’s two special interests are 1) Robotics and Multibody Dynamics, especially through Multibody Dynamics for Rural Applications (MuDRA) and his book on Multibody Systems, and 2) Robotic Competition Based Education in Engineering (RoCK-BEE), an innovative teaching method and book (pothi.com).

Prof. Subir Kumar Saha, a 1983 mechanical engineering graduate from the RE College (Now NIT), Durgapur, India, completed his M. Tech from IIT Kharagpur, India, and Ph. D from McGill University, Canada. Upon completion of his Ph. D, he joined Toshiba Corporation’s R&D Center in Japan. After 4-years of work experience in Japan, he has been with IIT Delhi since 1996.
