If you have any questions please speak with Elizabeth * Design review is in week 15 Bolivian Culture Spotlight Tiwanaku, located west of the city of La Paz, is a Pre-Columbian archaeological site. It is considered one of the largest archaeological sites in South American covering around 4 square kilometers and the most important archaeological sites in Bolivia. The site is a protected area under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It is said that in its peak, around AD 800, the site was home to 10,000 to 20,000 residents. The site was first discovered and recorded in written history in 1549 by Spanish conquistador, Pedro Cieza de Leon. The age of the site has been debated over the years but most recently a statistical assessment of radiocarbon dates estimate that the site was founded around AD 110.
