Bolivian Culture Spotlight

The national sport in Bolivia is soccer (or football as it is called outside the United States).  Football is a huge part of Bolivian culture and many joke that it is like a religion to the country as die hard fans will plan their social and work lives around it.

The Bolivian national football team is known as La Verde for their distinct green uniforms and they have represented the country of Bolivia internationally since 1926.  The Bolivian Football Federation is one of the 10 members of FIFA's South American Confederation.  Their home stadium, Estadio Hernando Siles, is located at an altitude of 11,032 feet above see level making it one of the highest football stadiums in the world.  Because of this, many visiting teams feel that Bolivia has an unfair advantage over their opponents because their players are better acclimatized to the extreme environment.

The national team is currently ranked 75th by FIFA.  They have appeared in 3 world cups; however, the team's greatest football achievement is considered to be their 1963 South American Championship title.
