ESE social this evening (5-7:30 Lafayette Brewing Company, 622 Main Street, Lafayette) AND Dr. Elly Best will be joining us, Dr. Best is a Senior Research Ecologist at the National Risk Management Research Laboratory (US EPA) (NRMRL -- http://www.epa.gov/nrmrl/) Water Supply and Water Resources Div. Therefore this evening you have the bonus opportunity to talk with her in an informal atmosphere while catching up with other ESE students and faculty. Dr. Best has recently started a research project on sustainable integrated watershed management of the Ohio River (OR) Basin taking ecosystem service values into consideration, and targeting to decrease WQ impairment and NPS loads. In relation to this overall project, her research associate Gavin Yang is in the early stage of following a screening-level approach to NP and sediment TMDL development of one of the major contributing tributaries to the NPs loads of the OR, the Wabash River. The Wabash River watershed was selected as an area where the potential impacts of watershed restoration projects of various size will be studied, because several projects are planned and/or ongoing that may affect NPs loads and the system is fairly well monitored enabling the use of various modeling approaches. 'Restoration projects' considered are: projects along and/or in headwaters and small rivers (wsh<200 sq mi), medium rivers (wsh 200-3681 sq mi), involving restoration of wetlands, forests, floodplain reconnection, and buffer strips. In addition croplands managed with the following BMPs are being considered for scaled-up evaluation in this project (CP21, CP22, CP23, CP31). Linda S.
