FYI. Grad students will only be able to apply for the NSF only *once* while in grad school from now on with exception for one transition year (Fall 2016).
Dear Graduate Chairs,
Please pay close attention to the forwarded message below. My thanks to Ruth Streveler for forwarding it to me.
Beginning with students entering grad school this fall, graduate students will be eligible to apply for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship only once while they are in graduate school
– either in their first year or in their second year. (Students who applied for the GRF in Fall 2015 as first year grad students will be allowed to apply again in Fall 2016 – since this is a transition year.)
NSF is hoping to get more students to apply in their senior year, thereby increasing the diversity of the students winning Graduate Research Fellowships and going on to grad school.
A Frequently Asked Questions page has been posted at http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2016/nsf16051/nsf16051.pdf
Please make sure your faculty members are aware of this significant change in the rules governing which students may apply for the NSF Fellowship.
Regards,
Audeen
