Important EPICS Pre-Semester Announcements

Welcome Students

Welcome to the EPICS family new students, and welcome back to the returners. We are excited to see the impact you will make in the community through your work this semester. There are some changes for this semester, so please pay careful attention to the announcements below.

Professional Development Hours   (PDHs)

All students are required to complete five (5) PDHs per credit hour each semester. The requirements are listed in the PDH Menu.

·         All first time students will need to watch the Introduction to EPICS playlist on YouTube before the first lab.

·         The Wallet Exercise PDH will be conducted differently depending on whether or not you are concurrently taking ENGR 133

o   ENGR 133 students will do the exercise in their ENGR 133 lecture and will automatically be given credit for the exercise

o   All other first-time EPICS students will need to enroll in one of the Wallet Exercise skill sessions in myEPICS, which will be posted during the first week of class.

Instructions for Logging Online Lecture Completion:

1)      Watch all videos in the appropriate playlist. It is a good idea to subscribe to the EPICS Youtube channel.

2)      Login to MyEPICS using your Purdue career account.

3)      Click View Activities, select ‘All’ in the ‘Show’ dropdown, and find activity with the naming matching the playlist.

4)      Click ‘Makeup’, fill out the form, and click ‘Submit’

Important: PDH Deduction for No-Shows to Live PDHs

Students who register for a PDH session and fail to attend will be deducted one PDH credit for each missed event. You may deregister up to 24 hours before the event if your schedule changes and you are unable to attend. This change is intended to ensure that students who wish to attend a session are able to do so, rather than have empty seats due to no-shows.

Lab Attendance

·         EPICS is a team oriented design course. Unexcused absence to lab will result in a steep penalty to your grade.

·         If you need an excused absence, be sure to let your TA and advisor know in advance.

·         See https://engineering.purdue.edu/EPICS/teams/team-documents/Grading for details.

Priority Project Program – Applications due August 30

The intent of the priority project program is to select a small set of projects (pilot to start with 5 or fewer) from the 100+ ongoing EPICS projects and to provide those project teams with additional expertise and resources to ensure that a timely and quality deliverable is produced. See https://engineering.purdue.edu/EPICS/purdue/priority_project_program for details.

EPICS Website

New students will want to become familiar with the EPICS website, where you will find the syllabus, lab and lecture schedule, assignments (milestones), and more.

See https://engineering.purdue.edu/EPICS/purdue.

Design Review

·         All EPICS teams present to outside reviewers two times per semester. For Spring, those will be weeks 7 and 15.

·         Midterm Review: October 1-4

·         Final Review: November 19-22. Note this is earlier than normal and plan accordingly.

Purchase Request System

·         Your team will need to purchase materials for use in the construction of your project.

·         All purchase requests will be initiated and managed through Docusign.

·         The Docusign form can be accessed through the EPICS website or directly at:

https://na2.docusign.net/Member/PowerFormSigning.aspx?PowerFormId=d3bdbc42-d1d1-4635-b88e-65505d9f9dd8
