MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE

Perfectionism

Perfectionism is “the tendency to demand of others or of oneself an extremely high or even flawless level of performance, in excess of what is required by the situation. It is associated with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and other mental health problems.” (American Psychological Association, 2018)

There are three types of perfectionism: self-oriented, socially prescribed, and other-oriented. Self-oriented is setting high standards personally and professionally and working towards goals. This is considered healthy perfectionism. Socially prescribed is being very self-critical. One feels immense pressure to be the best and worries others will reject them if they are not perfect. This is considered unhealthy perfectionism. Other-oriented is when one holds others to perfect standards and can be critical and judgmental. It is often hard for students to collaborate with instructors and peers who will accept nothing but perfection. Like socially prescribed perfectionism, this too is unhealthy perfectionism. (Curran and Hill, 2017)

In 2017 Curran and Hill compared 28 years of perfectionism data and determined how it is affecting mental health. In 1989, 9% of respondents had clinically significant perfectionism, in 2017 it rose to 18% and in 2050 perfectionism rates are projected to reach 33%. Clinically significant perfectionism exhibits the largest association of all dimensions of mental health challenges including anxiety, depression, social phobia, and suicidal thoughts. (Curran and Hill, 2017)

The first step in conquering the detrimental side of perfectionism is to first become aware of it. The next step is to manage those negative perfectionistic thoughts by practicing mindfulness, reading books about perfectionism, and getting involved and connected in your community. Therapy is also an option. If you would like to talk to someone about challenges with perfectionism or any other concerns, please stop in to see the CoE CARES Hub therapist, Jennie Beutler, during daily walk-in “Let’s Talk” hours, ARMS 1251, Monday through Friday, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. or schedule an initial brief screening phone appointment with Jennie here.
