The Center for Healthy Living on Purdue's West Lafayette campus introduces its comprehensive "Living with Diabetes" program. This is free to benefits-eligible faculty and staff - including those who have opted out of Purdue medical coverage - and for spouses/same-sex domestic partners and adult dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan. Also open to parents and guardians of children under the age of 18 (covered on a Purdue medical plan) who have been diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes who would like to attend on behalf of their child(ren). The same plan provisions in regards to medication discounts would apply to the child(ren). Since that time, enrollment has been popular and participants have successfully continued to make changes to improve their lives. During the fall 2014 session and spring 2015 session, a total of 117 individuals successfully completed the program with an average 0.5 percent reduced A1C -- a measurement of a person's average levels of blood glucose, or blood sugar, over the past three months -- at baseline for type 2 diabetes. In our spring 2015 class, three individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes dropped their A1C by an average of 3.9 percent each by the end of the 12-week session. The basics * The program provides education and support for those who are living with diabetes. * Those covered on a Purdue medical plan will get discounts on their diabetes medications throughout 2016 and ongoing when they maintain participation in the program. * The program is available at no charge to benefits-eligible faculty and staff at all Purdue campuses - including those who have opted out of Purdue medical coverage - and for spouses/same-sex domestic partners and adult dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan. In addition, parents of minor children (covered on a Purdue medical plan) may participate on behalf of the child. Staff at regional campuses will be provided telephonic and portal support to complete the program. * Purdue employees who work during the program's meeting and appointment times can participate in paid status with supervisor approval and don't need to take sick leave or vacation. * You have access to expert services of the center's health care professionals, including: * Suzanne Rossiter: A registered nurse (RN) who is a certified diabetes educator and health and wellness coach; * Kamal Singh: A pharmacist (PharmD) who is specially trained in medication therapy management (MTM); and * Ellen Welch: A registered dietitian (RD) who will assist with individualized meal planning.
