Dear Colleagues,

A quick note to go along with the message below re the 2014-15 School Service Assignments.  You’ll notice that we have a few more committees this year, to reflect growing needs in certain areas, such as Distance Education and Professional MS programs.  To better assign responsibility and service credit, we have also created a separate committee for Undergraduate Recruiting/Retention, that was previously a subset of the UG committee.

You may also notice new leadership of several committees – this is to provide leadership opportunities for more colleagues.  In this connection, Sang Kim has kindly agreed to serve as Chair of the Faculty Recruiting committee, while I remain as a member along with several others.  The committee’s job, as in the past, is to solicit/screen faculty applicants and identify candidates for campus interviews – we all help occasionally with this task to evaluate candidates which lie beyond the committee’s expertise.   Decisions re whom to make offers will continue to be made, following the usual evaluations after visits, during faculty meetings.  Once selected, I’ll work with the candidates to develop their start-up packages for CoE approval.

Finally, since the current School Strategic Plan will end in December 2014, a new committee (composed of a few faculty, staff, students, alumni and IAC members) has been meeting since March this year to formulate the next 5-year plan.   We expect to have a draft ready by ~August 15, so that it can be discussed at the August 22 Faculty Retreat and during the fall Industrial Advisory Council meeting (Sep 26).  Following reviews by various constituents, the final version should be completed and distributed by Dec 15, 2014.

I thank all those who have accepted leadership responsibilities for our School’s various service assignments this year.  Together, we’ll work towards a brighter future for our School!

With best wishes,

Arvind
