CHE Distinguished and Named Professors, various updates in reverse chronological order. 1. Alina Alexeenko/AAE action to nominate for Riley Professorship - straw poll; I have heard from 5 members of the CHE-DNP, all in support. We will have a formal vote at our meeting today, right after the CHE Faculty meeting. 2. Outside letters for Named Professorship nominations (update) * Steve Beaudoin; based on feedback from the CHE-DNP and after consultation with the donor and Steve Beaudoin, this has been changed from a limited-term named professorship to a limited-term named directorship (for PERC). Given the history of successes leading PERC including the recent breakthrough with ACMI's massive investment in Indiana, I believe it will be straightforward to get very strong external letters of support for Steve. * Vilas Pol; we will go for outside letters after the positive impact of the Jaker Technology contract and gifts have been incorporated into Purdue (still waiting for these action items to finalize). * Liz Topp and John Morgan; proceed with outside letters for the Nichols and Swanson chairs. --- Sang Sangtae Kim Distinguished Professor Jay and Cynthia Ihlenfeld Head Davidson School of Chemical Engineering Purdue University

CHE Distinguished and Named Professors, Please see below the email trail with Bill Crossley, Head of AAE, re their school's nomination of Alina Alexeenko for a Riley Professorship (limited term named professorship in the College of Engineering). His proposal is that AAE and CHE share the cost of repaying the Riley funds, and I agreed to have this reviewed by our CHE committee. AAE as the primary tenure home would handle the nomination including the correspondence with the external letter writers. CHE Committee of Distinguished and Named Professors, Attached please see the results of the straw poll. Because of some of the feedback and written commentary, I have also appended below the university's requirements and expectations for named and limited-term named professorships, especially highlighting those situations that look at factors other than academic scholarship. We can go out for external letters based on these results. They key decision point will occur when the completed dossier (including the letters) are assembled. Faculty recipients of these awards should be outstandingly original, creative and productive individuals whose achievements in discovery and learning have been internationally recognized or who have made a unique contribution to the University through discovery, learning and/or engagement. ... Named Professor(ship) A title that recognizes a professorship supported by an external funding source. Named Professorships must meet the requirements of University policy and procedures on naming opportunities. The purpose of a Named Professorship is to attract and retain top quality faculty. While it is expected that recipients of Named Professorships are individuals of high accomplishment, faculty with the rank of assistant, associate or full professor may hold a Named Professorship. It is not an academic designation, but a form of recognition. The term of a Named Professorship is specified in writing and may be revoked where performance or other factors are determined to warrant such action. A Named Professorship is not a prerequisite for becoming a Distinguished Professor. ... Named Term Professor(ship) A title that recognizes the achievements of assistant, associate or full professors who have distinguished themselves among their peers, but who are not yet candidates for Named Professorships. The recipient holds the title of the vacant Named Professorship, with the word "term" inserted, for a one-time, non-renewable term not exceeding five years. Recipients may not hold a University Faculty Scholar designation at the same time, and the Named Term Professorship will be discontinued if the faculty member receives a Named or Distinguished Professor title. The endowment earnings that accrue while a Named Professorship remains vacant may provide the source of funds for this award. A Named Term Professorship may be revoked where performance or other factors are determined to warrant such action.
