Ice accumulations are threatening to fall from several Purdue campus buildings, including Beering and Heavilon halls, Mackey Arena, Stewart Center, Mollenkopf Athletic Center, the Armory, and the Turf Recreation Exercise Center. "We have been installing signage and barricades, but pedestrians too often ignore them," said John Cox, Purdue police chief. "This is a significant concern in certain areas, and we don't want anyone to be hurt." Purdue firefighters and buildings and grounds workers are expected to try to knock the ice off Beering on Friday (Feb. 11), which will impact foot and vehicle traffic on University Street. The university also has asked CityBus to move its stop from the area on the west side of Beering to an area north of the Armory. Just as significant a problem is the ice that will form on walkways because of the thawing and freezing, Cox said. "Our grounds workers will try to stay ahead of the problem, but everyone needs to be alert for icy areas," he said. Any other potential hazards can be reported to 765-494-3087 or to police at 765-494-8221.
