FW: Purdue University, School of Chemical Engineering - 2011 Kelly Lecture
Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Kelly Lecture Series Dr. Stanley I. Sandler H.B. DuPont Chair of Chemical Engineering, Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry University of Delaware April 5, 2011 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. - FRNY G140 "Destroying Weapons of Mass Destruction" Abstract: This talk will discuss two projects the speaker has been involved with as a consultant to various agencies. The first was the destruction of rockets, projectiles, land mines and other armed weapons loaded with sarin, VX or mustard agent. While technical issues were involved, political, social and environmental issues were very important, and effort was spent dealing with local citizens groups that had different and sometimes conflicting interests. The second and ongoing project is the safe disposal of radioactive wastes from the production of nuclear weapons during WW II and the cold war. Here the challenges are largely technical with some over lay of political issues. This project has a long history of missed deadlines and ever increasing cost estimates making this the most expensive public works project currently underway. April 6, 2011 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - FRNY 3059 "Quantum Mechanics: An Underutilized Tool in Thermodynamics" Abstract: In this talk the various ways computational quantum mechanics can be used in applied thermodynamics will be highlighted. We start with the most rigorous procedures of the ab initio calculation of the interactions between molecules that are used in computer simulation. We then progress, in steps, to less rigorous but easily used methods, including the very successful continuum solvation models. Bio: Stanley I. Sandler is the H. B. du Pont Chair of Chemical Engineering at the University of Delaware, where he has also been department chair and acting dean.. He is the author of approximately 375 papers, and several books including the two textbooks "Chemical, Biochemical and Engineering Thermodynamics" and the recently published "Introduction to Applied Statistical Thermodynamics". He has received numerous honors including the Professional Progress, Warren K. Lewis and Founder's Awards from the AIChE, and the E. V. Murphree Award from the ACS and other international awards. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and is the editor of the AIChE Journal. His current and recent visiting professorships include the National University of Singapore, the University of Melbourne (Australia) and Harbin Institute of Technology (China). He is a fellow of both the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (England). Debbie Luedtke Deborah P.
