Purdue Chemical Engineering and Medical Research: A Review of the Past and a Vision of the Future

January 25, 2011

3:30 - 4:30 p.m.

FRNY G140

Abstract:

This presentation will concentrate on the role of Purdue’s School of Chemical Engineering in the field of medical research, which is now more often described by the broadened term of “biomedical” research.  There will be a review of the early contributions which led to what is now university-wide involvement.  Current School research areas will be described and a prediction made for the potential for future involvement.

Bio:

Dr. Robert Hannemann is a board-certified pediatrician and Visiting Professor of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering and Child Psychology at Purdue University.  His undergraduate degree was in chemical engineering from Purdue University.  His medical training was at Indiana University with specialized training in pediatrics at Riley Hospital for Children at the Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis, IN.  Dr. Hannemann has had extensive experience in both clinical and biomedical engineering research.  He has been involved in health care issues at the national level, as President of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and as a member of national committees including the Secretary’s (Health and Human Services) Advisory Committee on Infant Mortality.  Dr. Hannemann’s research interests have been broad-based ranging from non-invasive diagnostic and treatment devices to the use of engineering modeling techniques in physiological systems and disease states as well as problems of the healthcare system.  He has received numerous recognitions for his activities including being named Eminent Engineer by Tau Beta Pi, Rainbow Award recipient by the Adam Walsh Children’s Fund and Sagamore of the Wabash by the governor of the State of Indiana.
