Subject: "a time to reflect and start the conversation"

College of Engineering Colleagues -

Diversity is a core value of Purdue’s College of Engineering. Recent events around the country and at Purdue remind us - as some of our students, faculty, and staff are reminded every day - that we have much work to do to create a place that is genuinely diverse, welcoming, and inclusive.

There will be no simple solution, there is no easy answer. I know, though, that it will take the entire community to make this a better place. For that reason, I am gong to borrow words from a message that ECE Professor Mimi Boutin sent to the ECE faculty. Their simplicity speaks volumes:

"I would like to encourage each one of you to take a moment to read this collection of students' experiences with racism on campus, and to reflect on these:

Let's start the conversation.”

We can and will add structure, discussions, programs, plans - but right now let us listen to our students' stories and let those stories give new empathy and renewed urgency to the conversation - because creating a respectful, welcoming climate is something that must belong to all of us.
