Abstract:
Mr. Deason will share how Purdue’s Innovation Ecosystem is empowering innovators to move their ideas to impact. The session will provide an overview of the innovation assets that
are available and how these assets work together to produce results. The overview will cover processes related to intellectual property, ideation and customer discovery and will also provide an overview of the physical assets that exist to support collaboration.
Purdue has undergone tremendous change with regard to innovation over the past four years. This session will help you understand what is happening and why.
Bio: Greg Deason, Senior Vice President - Purdue Research Foundation and Director of Innovation
and Entrepreneurship for the Burton Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship, leads the teams that are accelerating startup and tech-based company activities at Purdue University. Mr. Deason’s responsibilities include activities of the Burton Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship
and the Purdue Foundry.
The Foundry is dedicated to taking ideas to a point of impact and to expanding the entrepreneurial ecosystem
in Indiana. By providing robust resources to inventors and entrepreneurs, new ventures are being created, ideas are making it to the marketplace and jobs are being created. The Foundry was announced in June of 2013 and has had record-breaking performance with
startup companies at Purdue University in the years that have followed.
Mr. Deason served as the Executive Director of the Purdue Research Park for two decades where he led the
team that transformed the Purdue Research Park in West Lafayette into an engine for Indiana's economic development initiatives. Mr. Deason was instrumental in the creation of Purdue Research Parks in multiple locations in Indiana beyond West Lafayette and
also the creation of the Purdue Technology Centers Complex – the largest university-affiliated business incubator complex in the country. During Deason’s 20-year tenure at the Purdue Research Park, the statewide network grew to more than 250 companies and
over 4,000 jobs; providing an annual impact of $1.3B to the Indiana economy. In September of 2013, Deason received the Career Achievement Award from the Association of University Research Parks. This award recognizes excellence in research park creation and
development and service to the industry.
Both Purdue Research Park and the Purdue Foundry have received their industry’s most prestigious international
awards for outstanding contributions and excellence in spurring economic development, assisting high-tech companies and having a vast impact on entrepreneurship.
Mr. Deason serves in a variety of capacities at Purdue University providing leadership as a board member for the Entrepreneurial
Bootcamp for Veterans as well as the Purdue Improved Crop Storage program that is impacting crop storage in Africa and other locations. Mr. Deason is also an evangelist for research parks, entrepreneurship and innovation at conferences and entrepreneurial
gatherings on a global basis.
