States consider new science-backed solution to save time and money on concrete infrastructure repair


To save time and money on the repair of concrete highways, bridges & other structures, states are considering a Purdue innovation as an alternative to decades-old methods used for estimating when newly poured concrete is ready to withstand heavy traffic.

Samuel Labi, Professor of Civil Engineering, and CCE student Jelin Sabu teamed up with members of the Purdue Polytechnic Institute to represent Purdue at the 1st Annual Artificial Intelligence Maritime Maneuver Indiana Collegiate Challenge (AIM ICC) held at the Pokagon State Park in Angola, IN.


 

Indiana LTAP Announces Rich Domonkos as Associate Program Director



Rich Domonkos has been with the Indiana LTAP Center for 17 years. First serving as a Training Specialist, Rich managed the training program and assisted with technology transfer in technical manuals, short courses, and seminars. In 2018, Rich began his service as Indiana LTAP's Program Manager.


 

New NSF center applies artificial intelligence to structural engineering


How will machine learning and AI revolutionize the practice of structural design and evaluation? That’s the question being addressed by a collaboration between Purdue University and the University of Houston, with funding by the National Science Foundation (NSF). They are establishing a new center to empower engineers that are responsible for designing and inspecting structures to use AI and machine learning in their everyday tasks.

Purdue to host 3rd annual HBCU Conference



Purdue University is hosting the 3rd Annual HBCU Conference on Friday, Sept 27, 2024, at the West Lafayette Campus. Students and faculty from various Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) will attend this conference organized by the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation (CCAT) research center at Purdue University.



 

Wildfires don't just burn farmland - they can contaminate the water farmers use to irrigate crops and support livestock


In a new study, Prof. Andrew Whelton worked with the Hawaii Department of Agriculture to assess damaged water systems due to wildfires. The results, he says, shows that the damages have become a whole-of-society problem.

Venkatesh Merwade, Professor of Civil Engineering, has been selected by the Indiana Association for Floodplain and Stormwater Management (INAFSM) to receive the 2024 Education and Outreach Award.



 

NASA visits Purdue to discuss extra-terrestrial habitats



Humans have always aspired to live among the stars — and Purdue University researchers are now working to make it happen. The Resilient Extra-Terrestrial Habitat institute (RETHi), a NASA-funded Space Technology Research Institute, explores how to make future space habitats resilient to disruptions and able to deal with complex situations autonomously.



 

Farewell, Bonnie!



Today, we bid farewell to LSCCE Administrative Assistant Bonnie Sondgeroth who is retiring after more than 27 years at Purdue. Bonnie has been a tremendous friend and colleague to us all throughout the years, and we wish her the very best in all of her future endeavors.
