Undergrad Program Ranked #3 in the U.S.


The Lyles School of Civil and Construction Engineering (LSCCE) is a top 3 undergraduate program in the United States.


U.S. News & World Report has released its national rankings of undergraduate programs for 2025 with Purdue University LSCCE ranked #3 in the nation. The rankings are computed from the responses to a survey sent to deans, heads, and selected senior faculty.


"Our success and achievements come as a result of the incredible and dedicated people who continue to make great strides in research, academics, and industry," said Rao S. Govindaraju, Bowen Engineering Head of Civil Engineering and Christopher B. and Susan S. Burke Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering. "Their efforts and persistent pursuits are what makes LSCCE truly special."

Overall, Purdue University's College of Engineering undergraduate program was ranked 8th in the nation.

Brandon Boor named Dr. Margery E. Hoffman Associate Professor in Civil Engineering


Dr. Brandon E. Boor has been named the Dr. Margery E. Hoffman Associate Professor in Civil Engineering. This professorship has a 5-year term that will extend through Fall 2029.


 

James Rowings honored with Engineering Alumni Association Loyalty Award


James E. (Jim) Rowings (BSCE 1975, MSCE 1979, Ph.D. 1982) has been honored by the Purdue Engineering Alumni Association with the 2024 Loyalty Award. He is a member of the Civil Engineering Advisory Council, and received the Civil Engineering Alumni Achievement Award (CEAAA) in 2009.


 

Mirian Velay-Lizancos named Bowen Scholar of Excellence, Associate Director of Pankow Lab



Mirian Velay-Lizancos, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering, has been named the Bowen Scholar of Excellence and also the Associate Director of the Pankow Materials Laboratory in the Lyles School of Civil and Construction Engineering.

Akanshu Sharma has been named the Jack and Kay Hockema Associate Professor in Civil Engineering. This professorship has a 5-year term that will extend through Fall 2029.


 

Satish Ukkusuri selected as senior member of INFORMS



Satish V. Ukkusuri, Reilly Professor of Civil Engineering and director of the Urban Mobility Networks and Intelligence (UMNI) Lab at Purdue, has been selected to be part of the summer 2024 class of INFORMSSenior Members. INFORMS advances and promotes the science and technology of decision making to save lives, save money, and solve problems through an array of highly-cited publications, conferences, competitions, networking communities, and professional development services.


 

Autonomous vehicles could understand their passengers better with ChatGPT, research shows


Imagine simply telling your vehicle, “I’m in a hurry,” and it automatically takes you on the most efficient route to where you need to be. Purdue University engineers have found that an autonomous vehicle (AV) can do this with the help of ChatGPT or other chatbots made possible by artificial intelligence algorithms called large language models.




 

Luna Lu joins NAE study committee on innovative materials in water resources infrastructure



Luna Lu, Associate Dean of Faculty of College of Engineering and Reilly Professor of Civil Engineering, is a member of the study committee formed by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) to identify key demands and challenges facing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) related to navigation and flood risk management assets.


 

Jie Shan appointed Deputy Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing


Jie Shan, Professor of Civil Engineering, has been appointed Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE journal Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing (TGRS).



 

CCE's AMP exhibit autonomous go-kart at Indy Autonomous Challenge



Autonomous Motorsports Purdue (AMP), advised by Lyles CCE professor, Samuel Labi, exhibited the club’s autonomous go-kart at the Innovation Paddock, in conjunction with the Autonomous Karting Series (AKS) organization. The paddock was a part of the Indy Autonomous Challenge event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on September 6, 2024.

Sichen Lu earns multiple honors


LSCCE and Herrick Labs PhD student Sichen Lu earned multiple honors, including Best Paper Award at the 8th International High Performance Buildings Conference, the Fontaine Memorial Fellowship, and the ASHRAE Grant-in-Aid Award.

 

Samuel Olabode receives second runner-up Best Paper Award at 2024 ASCE i3CE conference


Construction Engineering Ph.D. student Oluwaseun Samuel Olabode has received the second runner-up Best Paper Award at the 2024 ASCE International Conference on Computing in Civil Engineering (i3ce2024), held at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA.



 

Hyewon Hailey Seo receives 2024 Best Student Award from Construction Industry Institute


Construction Engineering Ph.D. student Hyewon Hailey Seo has been honored with the Outstanding Student Award by the Construction Industry Institute (CII). This award recognizes her exceptional academic achievements, dedication, and commitment to excellence.



 

Joel Gomez breaks the Americas record at the Paralympic


Competing in the Paralympic final of the 1,500-meter T13 at Stade de France, Gomez finished in 3:48.42. He placed seventh overall for Team USA, his best career Paralympic Games finish. Along with setting an Americas record, Gomez bested his previous personal-best time by two seconds. He was 0.13 seconds shy of also breaking what was the world record entering the day.



 
 

Teaching kids about Civil and Construction Engineering



Earlier this month, Lyles School of Civil and Construction Engineering Prof. Sogand Hasanzadeh's I2Safe lab team held an outreach event at the Imagination Station to inspire and capture the imaginations of kids by introducing them to the world of civil and construction engineering through hands-on, interactive activities.
