9-23-07 SUNDAY DP Visit for the Big 10+ Grad Expo Tour
Greetings! In conversing with Dana Werner from the Graduate Student Recruitment Services, we expect somewhere around 80 guests for this visit on Sunday, September 23, 2007 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Candiss Vibbert and I talked through this event and we would like to have this large group divided into 4 smaller groups of approximately 20 attendees to tour Bindley and Birck. This would allow for 2 tour guides from Bindley and two from Birck to accommodate this group. Dr. Vibbert feels that graduate students would be fine for this tour. If there is one graduate student who would be willing to be the lead person for this visit, other staff would not need to attend. We would need a graduate student who has access to the buildings, is responsible and willing to welcome and divide the large group into 4 smaller groups. We could ask them to meet in the Morgan Center or the Atrium of the Birck Center. A proposed agenda: 4:30 p.m. to 4:40 p.m. - Gather the group, welcome them and divide into Groups A, B, C and D 4:40 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. - Groups A and B tour Bindley while Groups C and D tour Birck 5:15 p.m. to 5:25 p.m. - Switch buildings 5:25 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. - Groups A and B tour Birck while Groups C and D tour Bindley 5:50 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. - Gather the 4 groups together and answer any questions Please note from the email below the different disciplines which will be of interest to these potential graduate students. We look forward to hearing from you about how we can accommodate this visit. Thanks! All the best, Beth W. Smith Secretary Discovery Park Engagement Purdue University (765) 494-0015 PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU¹RE WILLING TO HELP OUT. THANKS! DEBORAH From: Werner, Dana K. Subject: RE: Grad Expo Tour Dr. Vibbert, There will not be any faculty with the students. There will be one graduate assistant or a staff member with them. Disciplines vary, but all are STEM. Popular majors are biology, biochemistry, chemistry, mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, aeronautical and astronautical engineering, and computer science or IT-related. The students are visiting Purdue from institutions around the nation. Subject: Grad Expo Tour Dear Dr. Vibbert, I spoke with Beth briefly yesterday and understand you¹d like to discuss the Birck Nanotechnology and Bindley Biosciences tours requested for prospective graduate students attending the Big 10+ Graduate School Expo on Sunday. I tried to reach you this morning, but will be in a meeting shortly, so I thought I would email you some additional information as well as my availability. Although our most recent tour numbers were 99 students, I expect that number to decrease for a variety of reasons, but probably not by as many as 20, so the tour numbers will probably still be large. We are calculating what we hope is a final count today. I understand from a colleague that in her experience the tours can be split (e.g., one tour leader for Bindley and one for Birck going their separate ways). If this would help make the group size more manageable, we could certainly do this. It would be ideal for the two groups to trade tour leaders, so they all get to see both centers. Another option may be for us to take half the group on a campus tour and drop off just half the group at the Park and then trade groups. Currently, the visitors are scheduled to have a campus tour from 3:30 to 4:15 pm and then begin facility tours. If you have any other ideas or prefer one of the above options, please let me know. Or, if you would like to further discuss, I¹ll be available after 11 am, but before 3 pm and may be reached at 6-3310. Thank you.
