[Mentoring_at_Purdue] Mentoring@Purdue Workshop TOMORROW
Good afternoon! Please join Mentoring@Purdue (M@P) TOMORROW for the Mentoring Best Practices workshop on Wednesday, November 15th from noon-1:00pm in Pfendler Hall room 241! M@P is a mentoring program designed with women and minority graduate students in the College of Agriculture at Purdue University in mind. M@P aims to improve the quality of graduate education through fostering mentoring relationships between graduate students and faculty or staff members in the Agricultural and Life Sciences. Mentoring has played a crucial role in the success of many individuals, especially those that are generally underserved. The M@P program helps students grow professionally, academically, and personally to become successful individuals in their chosen area of study. M@P is designed to meet the mentoring needs of the mentors and mentees in the program through events, group forums, guest speakers, and workshops. As a participant in M@P, you will have numerous opportunities for academic and personal growth, support, encouragement, and assistance. M@P will provide training and guidance to both parties on how to have an effective mentor-mentee relationship. Productive mentoring does not just happen. Successful mentoring relationships depend on the following best practices: (1) Clear and open communication of perspectives and interests; increasing your awareness of others; active listening and being able to share your own experiences are key (2) High standards of ethics and professionalism. Mentors have the responsibility of teaching and role modeling the appropriate ethical behavior of academic professionals (3) Awareness of and the ability to openly discuss differences (4) Strategies for addressing challenges as they arise. Join us to hear about Mentoring Best Practices from our distinguish panel including Dr. Brian Farkas, Head of the Department of Food Science, James Foster, Outreach Coordinator of the University Residences Peer Mentoring Program, and Elise Lofgren, Ph.D. student in the Department of Youth Development and Agricultural Education.
