[cid:image004.jpg@01D685C0.EB336F80] The BNC Faculty Seminar Series is designed to provide faculty a platform to present an overview of their research and the opportunity for collaborative discussion with other BNC faculty and researchers across six colleges and 15 academic units. Dr. Sorin Adam Matei Professor of Communication and the Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Education in the College of Liberal Arts February 25th, 2021 | 12:00pm Join Zoom: https://purdue-edu.zoom.us/j/91754078808 Title: Are scientists natural storytellers? Of course, they are! Abstract: Science is the process of throwing out the old and ushering in the new. We do this by replacing old assumptions with new causal mechanisms validated by the data. In the process, we teach the world new things. You probably knew all that. But did you know that storytelling is also about challenging assumptions, proposing new explanations, and teaching? Dr. Matei will explain why good science is good storytelling and why and how good scientists are natural storytellers. You can find an engaging introduction to Dr. Matei's theory of science and storytelling in this series of 5 minute video tutorials http://matei.org/url/dstoryplaylist [cid:image003.png@01D708FE.9504BCB0]Bio: Dr. Sorin Adam Matei is passioned about practically applying theoretical ideas derived from communication, social science, and ethics to improving the practice of collaboration in science and education. He is the creator of the Data storytelling program https://eventreg.purdue.edu/info/data-storytelling/ , offered by Purdue Online to non-credit learners throughout the world, and of the Engaged Science Communication short course - http://matei.org/url/engagedscience , available to any Purdue learner, regardless of status, for free.
