COHC, SLHS Title: Cortical measures of cognitive engagement during speech processing Abstract: Cochlear implants (CIs) are one of the most successful medical prostheses in the world. Yet, it is still unclear as to why there is substantial variability in speech recognition performance among CI users. Attempts to better understand this enigma have used behavioral tasks to examine cognitive ability in the domain of executive function in adult CI users. Previous studies have compared behavioral speech recognition ability using meaningful and anomalous sentences (no semantic meaning while being grammatically correct) to investigate the role of neurocognitive function in CI outcomes. In this talk, I will describe an ongoing study in normal-hearing listeners that aims to objectively measure cognitive engagement in the brain while listening to meaningful vs anomalous speech. Preliminary results from two experiments will be presented: the first experiment used a passive listening task, while the second experiment required listeners to actively participate using a word-monitoring response task. The short-term goal of these studies is to optimize an experimental paradigm that can reveal neurocognitive engagement in the listening brain, with the long-term goal of implementing this protocol in CI users to investigate the relationship between cognition and speech recognition outcomes.
