BNC All User Meeting

All,

Beginning this calendar year the annual BNC All User Meeting is being replaced with an online module and quiz required for all users wishing to maintain lab access to any of the dry, solvent, acid, bio, or cleanroom labs in BNC for the year 2019.

To begin earning the badge:

1.       Navigate to the BNC Passport Group page: https://www.openpassport.org/Group/bnc

2.       Login with your Purdue ID and BoilerKey (if not already logged in)

3.       Once at the BNC Passport Group page, click the “Join Group” button.

4.       Click the BNC 151 badge icon, or navigate directly to the badge page: https://www.openpassport.org/Badge/bnc151-2019

5.       Click the “Get Started” button

This should be more convenient for researchers, who will no longer need to attend a presentation at a specific time and date after business hours. It will also allow BNC Staff to ensure that key concepts are understood by those with Lab access.  This will be an annual requirement, and a new badge must be earned every January in order to retain access to Birck facilities for that calendar year.

Obtaining this badge requires:

1.       A review of the current BNC 150 training slides.

2.       A review of the current Chemical Hygiene Plan.

3.       Passing a quiz on content from the BNC 150 training slides and the Chemical Hygiene Plan. An 80% or better is required to pass. The quiz may be retaken once, if needed. You may refer to the BNC 150 slides and Chemical Hygiene Plan during the quiz.

Please note:

·         BNC Lab access will be revoked if not completed by 11:59:59 PM on Thursday, January 24th, 2019.

·         If completed after this date, to get your access reinstated, forward a copy of your badge completion email to Mary Jo Totten with the subject line "Late BNC 151 Completion". Access will be reinstated after a 7 day waiting period.

·         If you fail to obtain an 80% after a second attempt on the quiz, your submission must be manually reset. Email Steve Jurss with the subject line "BNC 151 Quiz Reset" to setup a meeting to discuss any points of confusion and reset your submission.

The review and quiz take the form of a badge in the Purdue developed Open Passport, a micro-credentialing system to demonstrate competencies and achievements. More information on Passport may be found here: https://www.openpassport.org/Account/GettingStartedGuide

BNC Cleanroom & Laboratory Closure

The Birck Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing the second scheduled closure to complete repairs to the building critical Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS) power systems February 5 through February 8, 2019.  Air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Tuesday, February 5 through 4 p.m. Friday, February 8.

All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until all repairs to the critical power systems are completed and all systems are returned to normal.  Only authorized personnel will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period.

In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this critical repair.  As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Tuesday, February 5 through 4 p.m. Friday, February 8.  However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings.  No chemical work will be allowed during this period.

It is anticipated that the building repairs will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, February 8.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding during this important critical repair.
