Introduction to XPS and Introduction to CasaXPS
Dear Colleagues,
Two XPS related workshops will be held March, 2018. It is a good practice to have at least one trained student in each research group using or planning to use Surface Analysis Characterization tools.
1) Introduction to XPS workshop - What you should know about X-ray pohotoelectron spectroscopy (http://bit.ly/1eqIM8U), March 19-20, 2018 @ 9:00 AM - BRK 1001.
Course Description: XPS is widely used to determine the chemical composition of a surface (element concentrations, chemical states, lateral and depth distributions, etc.). Nowadays XPS has become a standard technique for the characterization of solid surfaces.
The course will teach how and what information can be provided by XPS. The quantification of the XPS data will be discussed in detail (thickness calculation, coverage, atomic percentage, etc.)
Instructor: Dmitry Zemlyanov, PhD, Senior Surface Science Application Scientist, Birck Nanotechnology Center, Purdue University
2) XPS Lite Workshop Introduction to CasaXPS (http://bit.ly/IYeOeu), March 26-27, 2018 @ 9:00 AM - BRK 1001.
Course Description: XPS is widely used to determine the chemical composition of a surface (element concentrations, chemical states, lateral and depth distributions, etc.). Nowadays XPS has become a standard technique for the characterization of solid surfaces.
However, XPS data require thorough analysis using a dedicated software. Purdue University has a site license for CasaXPS allowing to perform a complete analysis of XPS data. The course aims to teach (1) what analysis should be applied to raw XPS data and (2)
how this can be done using CasaXPS. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of XPS data using CasaXPS will be discussed in detail as well. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops to follow data analysis using CasaXPS.
Instructor: Dmitry Zemlyanov, PhD, Senior Surface Science Application Scientist, Birck Nanotechnology Center, Purdue University (dzemlian@purdue.edu)

Birck Process Cap Modification
The
Birck research community has enjoyed a $13K cap per student per project for a number of years. The way this cap has been working is as follows: If any one student working on one research project reached $13K in charges during a fiscal year, then additional
access & equipment charges for the remainder of that fiscal year were waived (covered by other Birck funds). Going forward we will retain the $13K cap as usual, but if any student continues to use facilities at a high rate and accumulates an
additional $15K in non-paid use, then the normal use rates will resume again at that $28K accumulated level. In other words for a fiscal year (July 1 – June 30), work between $0 - $13K is paid at normal rates. Then work done between $13K - $28K is
at no charge, and any work continuing above $28K resumes charging at the normal rates. This is essentially a cap on the cap
and it will begin February 1, 2018.
Aspire Four Week Look Ahead Schedule
Attached is the Aspire Four Week Look Ahead Schedule. It is the projection of vibration and/or noise issues with the construction outside of Birck.
