Professor Mark Lundstrom, ECE, was presented with an IEEE Award at the International Semiconductor Device Research Symposium. The van der Ziel Award was established in honor of Professor Aldert van der Ziel for his long and distinguished career as an educator and a research scientist. Past recipients of the Aldert van der Ziel Award include Arthur Milnes, Lester Eastman, Herbert Kroemer (Nobel Laureate), Michael Shur, Marvin H. White, James D. Plummer, and Ben Streetman.

Professor Vladimir Shalaev has won the 2010 Willis E. Lamb Award for his pioneering studies of optical metamaterials and plasmonic nanostructures. The award honors Willis E. Lamb, Jr., famous laser scientist and 1955 winner of the Nobel Prize in physics. [about Dr. Lamb]

LIFE ON THE OUTSIDE Ella Mary Coy arrived on December 19th, born to John and Jen Coy. Ms. Coy weighed in at 7 pounds, 9 ounces and was 19.5 inches long. John tells us that "less than 25 min from the time we got to the room until Ella announced her arrival with a hearty cry." [Photo]

Faculty, staff, and students who have fever or other influenza symptoms should seek medical care. PLEASE DO NOT REPORT TO WORK WHILE ILL. Birck Nanotechnology Center staff will be notified of an emergency situation by telephone in the order set out in the BNC’s Phone Tree. BNC faculty members will receive an e-mail message from Monica Allain or Tim Sands. Members of the Faculty (Professors and Research Professors) are responsible for contacting each of their group members, including graduate students, undergraduate researchers, postdoctoral fellows and research scientists.
