Unapproved/Dangerous Chemical Found in Cleanroom

Dear Birck Users, This notice is to alert you to a very serious issue that was discovered by a staff member yesterday in the cleanroom. A container of potassium cyanide and zinc cyanide pellets was discovered stored in the under-cabinet of an acid hood. This is a very serious matter on two fronts: 1. Cyanide and cyanide compounds are never approved for use in any Birck lab or cleanroom so this was brought in by someone without permission, outside of our required SDS-approval process; and 2. Cyanide mixed with acids will generate a gas that is deadly to anyone nearby. Both of these issues have put us all in danger, and will not be tolerated. We are working with EH&S to dispose of this properly, with proper handling precautions that they use for dangerous chemicals. Currently it is labeled as being extremely dangerous, and is being kept in a closed solvent hood in a secondary container until EH&S can deal with it. Please Birck community, DO NOT bring any unapproved chemicals into our facility. If you have a chemical that needs approval, submit the SDS to us to receive permission to use it in Birck. Dear Birck Community, At 2 pm on Tuesday, April 29th Glen Easterbrook and Ian Tyrer-Tomkinson from Hiden Analytical will be visiting Birck Nanotechnology Center, related to the commissioning a Hiden Mass Spectrometer System for layer and end point detection on our AJA Ion Mill. If you would like to pick Glen and Ian’s brains on applications in mass spectrometry for semiconductor, thin film, and plasma processes in general, they will be delighted to introduce the range of associated products from Hiden Analytical and advise on suitable configurations for your individual applications. Update on Cleanroom Fume Hoods

Dear Cleanroom Users, Update as of 4/17, 4:30 pm There have been a series of tests and meetings today regarding the deficiencies of our new cleanroom fume hoods. We shut them down yesterday due to unsafe conditions regarding leaking work surfaces and exhaust flow, and they remain down today. Design flaws have been documented and the fume hood vendor, Lab Crafters, has been notified. They are sending representatives in on Monday and we have a critical meeting with them Monday afternoon at 1:00 to discuss remediation for all the issues. Until the hoods are upgraded to a safe working condition they will remain unavailable. Immediate access to fume hoods: There are two solvent and two acid hoods available for use now in H-Bay. These are the previous style hoods and are up, safe, and available for use. Please share space in these hoods since the working space is limited. Potential short-term interim options: 1) Pepper construction is exploring an option to temporarily keep the hood decks from leaking. It is not a proven method but will be tested and either confirmed or failed. This might apply to a very small number of the new hoods and we will notify users when and if this happens over the next few days. 2) Construction progress in D-Bay next week will expose a few new hoods to the cleanroom. These will be tested and could potentially be used on an interim basis sometime next week. We will notify the community if and when these become available. Long-term permanent fixes: Lab Crafters will be required to fix all the issues and after their visit they will develop remediation plans for each hood. The timing of this is uncertain until fixes can be identified, installed, & tested. We apologize for this inconvenience but the safety of our users is the top priority and we can't allow any potential unsafe fume hoods to be used under the current conditions. New Birck Fume Hoods

Dear Birck Cleanroom Users, As the new cleanroom fume hoods have come online and are being used for research operations we've observed some very concerning issues. Some fundamental air-flow issues remain and we're working on solutions but more concerning is the performance of the hoods when used with chemicals. The hoods have a design flaw that uses vent holes in the upper work surface, venting the lower cabinet area through the hood exhaust. These vent holes are located in areas where chemicals and rinse water can leak through the holes and flow into the cabinets below. Puddling in the lower cabinets has been seen in almost all hoods, indicating that these holes are leaking from the upper deck. We've measured the pH in a lower cabinet and it was clearly acidic indicating that more than water is leaking into the storage area. Therefore, due to safety concerns, we are shutting down all the hoods immediately until a plan is developed by the hood supplier and the construction management to remedy these issues. We apologize for this inconvenience, but the safety of all our users is clearly the top priority and we can't continue working in unsafe hoods. We will work with the construction company and fume hood vendors to find a safe and effective solution as soon as possible. Until then the cleanroom hoods are not available for use.
