Solvents in Acid Hoods

Dear Birck cleanroom users, We shared recently that someone had been using solvents in our acid hoods, and this practice is strictly forbidden due to safety reasons and waste handling issues. Periodically we submit a sample of our neutralized acid waste to a testing company where they analyze the sample for many different chemicals. Our recent submission revealed a high concentration of acetone which reflects someone disposing of solvents down our acid waste drains. As you know, all solvent waste must be containerized and not disposed of down any drain in Birck. Please proceed accordingly. Ron

N-Bay Shutdown

Dear Birck Users, As part of the Birck Modernization Project the contractors need to begin working in N-Bay starting on Monday, Aug. 4 and continuing through that week, finishing their work late Friday, Aug. 8. The entire bay will be shut down during this week-long period, and there will be no access to these tools during this time: * Nanoimprint * Hot Plates * MJB3_2, MJB4, MA6, SB6, Heidelberg * Spinner 1, Spinner 3 * Optical Microscopes * Apreo SEM. Solvent Waste

Dear Birck Users, Earlier today an engineering staff member observed a graduate student rinsing a beaker with the isopropanol squirt bottle directly into the drain in a photoresist hood, putting organic solvent directly into the wastewater system. We critically remind users that NO organic solvents are permitted down the drain whatsoever, no exceptions. This user was under the impression IPA was acceptable, and this is not the case. Organic solvents are to be poured into the appropriate non-halogenated or halogenated solvent waste bottle, and the bottle is to be labeled with the volume of the material added to it. NONE of this organic material is to be poured down the drain, regardless of where the drain is, as this will damage our Birck drain system. Please adhere to these standard Birck solvent waste practices completely and immediately. Ron Reger Birck Engineering

Solvents in Acid Hoods

Dear Birck Users, Over the weekend a user reported that there were solvent bottles used in an acid hood in H-Bay. This is a dangerous breach of Birck fume hood protocol! We have segregated acid/base use from solvent use for the critical reason that some solvents when mixed with acids can cause explosions and/ore fires. This practice must stop immediately for the safety of all users within Birck, and for the protection of our assets in the facility. We know that the temporary lack of fume hoods is causing cramped working conditions but the segregation of acids & solvents must be strictly adhered to! Please note this urgent request and do not cross solvents into acid hoods and vice versa. We're working with the construction company and architects to remedy our fume hood shortage, but please keep safety as our top priority. Thank you for your support. Birck Management

Keyence Demo tomorrow June 18 from 2-4 BRK 2001

Find out the "Key" to getting fantastic images, measurents with the Keyence VHX-7000 digital microscope and in-depth meaurements on the Keyence VK-X3000. We have both of these microscopes in our cleanroom. We will have two experts from Keyence here to demo the microscopes and answer any questions you might have. Representing Keyence and the VHX-7000 will be Devin Harrison. Representing Keyence and the VK-X3000 will be Austin Stachel. Please feel free to ask questions, bring a sample you would like to have them look at or measure. The session will be from 2pm-4pm tomorrow June 18, 2025. The location will be BRK 2001. Probably the VHX-7000 will be from 2pm to 3pm and the VK-X3000 will be 3pm to 4pm.Hope to see you there . Interlocks being disabled

Attention BNC equipment users: I have found several instances lately of iLab equipment interlocks being disabled in order to use a tool. Doing this in order to use the equipment without reserving a session is strictly forbidden. If you encounter difficulty with an interlock for a properly reserved session, your first point of contact should be the equipment engineer. If they aren't available, you can contact me (hosler0(a)purdue.edu) and I can help you resolve the issue. Several interlocks are being reconnected at this time so be aware of this and verify your session is enabled as a first step. Some interlocks are now disabling mouse and keyboard connections via a USB hub. Moving these is ports to other ones, or any other change of cabling constitutes disabling an interlock.
