Dear Birck Community, We are pleased to invite you to attend the Birck Annual Research Symposium, taking place Monday–Tuesday, April 27–28, 2026. This two-day event will showcase cutting-edge research, foster collaboration, and strengthen connections between academia and industry within the Birck Nanotechnology Center and the broader Purdue community. Monday, April 27 – Birck Industry Day Hosted at the Burton Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship, this day will feature industry-focused talks and discussions. Followed by a poster session, vendor trade show, and Digital Twins demos in the Birck Nanotechnology Center Atrium. Tuesday, April 28 – Birck Academic Day Held in the Hall for Discovery and Learning Research, this day will include invited presentations from distinguished researchers and faculty across multiple disciplines. We encourage all interested faculty, staff, students, and collaborators to register in advance to ensure adequate planning for the event. Excessive Chemical Use

Dear Birck Researchers, We have welcomed many new users to our community in recent weeks, from new graduate students to undergraduate students taking the popular courses on semiconductor processing and packaging. This is fulfilling our vision for "Innovation" and "Education," and we are pleased to support these programs to their fullest. One issue that has surfaced is higher use of chemicals that comes with having additional users. We have observed a much higher use of chemicals, especially solvents and developers, that support this additional processing. Also, our observations indicate that more researchers are using full 4" wafers and fewer coupons, which requires additional chemical use. We would like to ask our research community to conserve the use of chemicals, and only use the amount needed for the process. We've seen a few cases where a large beaker was 80% full just to process one wafer at the bottom. This is wasteful and expensive, so please be aware and use only the minimum amount of material that you need for the process. In the meantime, we're also reevaluating our order quantities and will increase our orders as appropriate. Thanks for your attention to this! Ron

The Zeiss ORION NanoFab

Dear BNC Community, I am pleased to announce that the Zeiss ORION NanoFab at the Birck Nanotechnology Center has been restored and is operational again after approximately nine months of downtime. The instrument enables (i) high-contrast, high-resolution nanoscale imaging and (ii) nanometer-scale milling and nanofabrication. A short flyer with additional information is attached. The Zeiss HIM will operate under a grace period for the next three months, from March 23 to June 23, 2026. During this period, user fees for HIM operation will be covered by Birck. To participate in this program, users are asked to submit a short proposal (maximum ~10 sentences) describing: 1. The research goals, and 2. How the HIM will be used and any planned follow-up work.
