This microscope is capable of topographic imaging of samples down to atomic resolution. Additionally, the physical interactions between the tip and sample can be leveraged to investigate a variety of multiphysics problems. AFM can measure the nanomechanical elasticity, viscoelasticity, adhesion, and failure of nanoscale structures. It can map conductivity, surface potential, and piezoelectric response with nanoscale resolution. It can probe the distribution of chemical species on a surface. In this talk, I will highlight my past research efforts that have touched on characterizing these different physical properties with AFM. This includes studying the nanomechanical properties of cellulose with force-displacement curves, measuring the ferroelectric response of hafnium oxide thin films with piezoresponse force microscopy, and mapping the distribution of active shampoo ingredients on hair with atomic force microscopy mass spectrometry. These research efforts have focused on advancing AFM's capabilities in performing these diverse types of measurements on very different samples. We had good results with this pilot study, taking in approximately 40 tickets and responding to them in a timely manner. We now want to officially launch this system for Birck-wide use, and to that end we will formally begin its use throughout Birck immediately after next week's PM shutdown. Therefore, on Monday, October 26 we are directing all equipment related issues to be reported using our ticketing system. During the ramp-up phase the staff members will continue to remind users to not use email, but rather the ticketing system. For the first month any email inquiries/reports will also be input into the ticket system, and after a month's time we will no longer accept email notices (after November 23). We realize this is a culture change for our facility and we will continue to remind users about the ticketing system as we go. Why are we doing this? We are always interested in improving our operations, and we know this will address our ability to know about issues quickly and address them responsively. We have benchmarked other facilities who use ticketing processes to their great benefit. Additionally our own ECN uses a similar ticketing system to address computer and network issues all across Purdue. Below is a message from Rich regarding the use of the ticketing system, and a link to the system. We look forward to your use of the system which will improve our engineering operations. REM Cardboard Boxes Dear Birck Bio Lab Users- The Radiological & Environmental Management group at Purdue (REM) provides boxes to Birck that are used for disposing biohazard waste. These boxes are removed by REM when they're filled with autoclaved waste from our bio labs. It has come to our attention that someone has taken some of these boxes, presumably for personal use. Additionally a pack of the boxes was moved away from the autoclave to across the galley, making it inconvenient to fill the boxes after autoclave. Please do not take or relocate these REM hazardous waste boxes. They have a critical function in removing biohazardous waste for all the biolabs within Birck. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. But at the same time we want to remind our entire user group of the critical importance of following the COVID safety protocols while using our facilities. If an outbreak of COVID exposures should happen at Birck there is a real possibility that we may need to close the facility again. So please read and support the following..... .....Some of our approved users are holding the doors open for others to enter the building. This may very well be a gesture of politeness to assist another, but it also can be perceived that non-approved people are entering our building with the assistance of one of our approved users. Additionally it does not allow us to have an accurate accounting of who is entering our building by evaluating card-swipe data. So everyone should swipe into Birck and not be let in by someone holding the door open. .....Face masks are required while in Birck. Approved users have been, and continue to be, strongly encouraged to bring their own face mask for their personal use while in the facility. At the entrances we have supplied quantities of disposable face masks for emergency use, but our supplies of these disposable masks are being depleted at the high rate of 300 - 400 masks per week. This rate of use seems exceptionally high when personal masks are strongly recommended. Please only take one mask from the supply, and only when you've forgotten your personal mask. ....Social distancing continues to be a challenge. This is a difficult habit to develop and groups of people have been seen clustered around a tool, or having a hallway conversation, and not adhering to the 6' spacing rule. Please continue to maintain at least 6' spacing between yourself and the nearest other person. Please stay vigilant in promoting and supporting these safety protocols. If we each do our part we will continue to stay open and conduct state-of-the-art research in our great facility. Chi Hwan Lee Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering October 22nd, 2020 | 12:00pm Join Zoom: https://purdue-edu.zoom.us/j/93857631004 Title: Sticker-Like Flexible Sensors for Wearable Healthcare Applications Abstract: [cid:image002.jpg@01D6A84F.875BA020] The global market for wearable technology is anticipated to grow and reach $71.23 billion by 2021 according to the new market research report published by the Scalar Market Research. The most compelling version of wearable products demands prolonged contact to the human body enabling high-precision detection of biomechanical, biochemical, or/and electrophysiological signals associated with health and other conditions affecting wellbeing. In this field, the biggest challenge is that the rigid or semi-flexible form of microsystems and sensors do not interface well with the soft, irregular surface of the human body. This mechanical mismatch results in discomfort to users as well as low signal-to-noise ratios in the collection of data. In the first part of this presentation, I will talk about my recent approaches to tackle this challenge by developing mechanically soft, deformable forms of microsystems and sensors. These approaches involve the use of advanced nanoengineering technologies that incorporate desired electronic functionalities directly into commercially-available garments or pads that are capable of unobtrusively interfacing to a specific body part. These innovative microsystems and sensors are designed for durability to be repeatedly attached and detached to/from the skin without irritating the wearer and damaging the devices. In addition, these devices are featured with patient-centered designs to meet critically important user requirements, including (1) breathability for user comfort, (2) conformability to the irregular surface of the skin, and (3) deformability against natural body movements. In the second part of this presentation, I will introduce the recent development of next-generation eye-wearable microsensor platform. Despite significant progress, current state-of-the-art skin-wearable microsystems and sensors are primarily suited for larger body parts (e.g., the wrist, chest, and limbs), but not for the much smaller, softer, and exceptionally-sensitive human eyes. To address this unmet need, I develop new nanoengineering technology that enables turning commercially-available soft contact lenses into lifesaving tele-monitoring tools that can non-invasively, accurately, comfortably, and continuously diagnose the status of chronic ocular diseases, such as glaucoma. This approach is unique and innovative because it will be applicable to various materials and designs of soft contact lenses that offer excellent biocompatibility, softness, transparency, oxygen permeability, wettability, and are able to fit a variety of corneal shapes. This will eventually allow clinicians and researchers to better understand and intervene in several aspects of personal and population ocular health. I will present recent outcomes of comprehensive experimental, computational, and pre-clinical studies for several eye-wearable microsystems and sensors to discuss about the device reliability, batch production strategy, data acquisition methodology, and safety. In summary, I will introduce recent research programs that make a significant paradigm shift from the current "skin-wearable" to "eye-wearable" biomedical devices using simple but effective microscale transducers. These research programs are novel and essential to the pursuit of advancing the field of microsystems and nanoengineering for their applications in wearable biomedical devices, pushing the disciplines forward, and bringing real impact to the society. Bio: Chi Hwan Lee is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and by Courtesy of Materials Engineering, and Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at Purdue University. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Optometry at Indiana University. Lee is the founding member and chief technical officer of Curasis, LLC and Rescue Biomedical, LLC and founding member and scientific advisor of Omniply Tech by Tandem Launch, Inc. He completed his postdoc in materials engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, received his PhD and MS in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University and BS in Mechanical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology. Chi Hwan Lee Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering October 22nd, 2020 | 12:00pm Join Zoom: https://purdue-edu.zoom.us/j/93857631004 Title: Sticker-Like Flexible Sensors for Wearable Healthcare Applications Abstract: [cid:image003.jpg@01D6A6C3.557FCA00] The global market for wearable technology is anticipated to grow and reach $71.23 billion by 2021 according to the new market research report published by the Scalar Market Research. The most compelling version of wearable products demands prolonged contact to the human body enabling high-precision detection of biomechanical, biochemical, or/and electrophysiological signals associated with health and other conditions affecting wellbeing. In this field, the biggest challenge is that the rigid or semi-flexible form of microsystems and sensors do not interface well with the soft, irregular surface of the human body. This mechanical mismatch results in discomfort to users as well as low signal-to-noise ratios in the collection of data. In the first part of this presentation, I will talk about my recent approaches to tackle this challenge by developing mechanically soft, deformable forms of microsystems and sensors. These approaches involve the use of advanced nanoengineering technologies that incorporate desired electronic functionalities directly into commercially-available garments or pads that are capable of unobtrusively interfacing to a specific body part. These innovative microsystems and sensors are designed for durability to be repeatedly attached and detached to/from the skin without irritating the wearer and damaging the devices. In addition, these devices are featured with patient-centered designs to meet critically important user requirements, including (1) breathability for user comfort, (2) conformability to the irregular surface of the skin, and (3) deformability against natural body movements. In the second part of this presentation, I will introduce the recent development of next-generation eye-wearable microsensor platform. Despite significant progress, current state-of-the-art skin-wearable microsystems and sensors are primarily suited for larger body parts (e.g., the wrist, chest, and limbs), but not for the much smaller, softer, and exceptionally-sensitive human eyes. To address this unmet need, I develop new nanoengineering technology that enables turning commercially-available soft contact lenses into lifesaving tele-monitoring tools that can non-invasively, accurately, comfortably, and continuously diagnose the status of chronic ocular diseases, such as glaucoma. This approach is unique and innovative because it will be applicable to various materials and designs of soft contact lenses that offer excellent biocompatibility, softness, transparency, oxygen permeability, wettability, and are able to fit a variety of corneal shapes. This will eventually allow clinicians and researchers to better understand and intervene in several aspects of personal and population ocular health. I will present recent outcomes of comprehensive experimental, computational, and pre-clinical studies for several eye-wearable microsystems and sensors to discuss about the device reliability, batch production strategy, data acquisition methodology, and safety. In summary, I will introduce recent research programs that make a significant paradigm shift from the current "skin-wearable" to "eye-wearable" biomedical devices using simple but effective microscale transducers. These research programs are novel and essential to the pursuit of advancing the field of microsystems and nanoengineering for their applications in wearable biomedical devices, pushing the disciplines forward, and bringing real impact to the society. Bio: Chi Hwan Lee is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and by Courtesy of Materials Engineering, and Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at Purdue University. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Optometry at Indiana University. Lee is the founding member and chief technical officer of Curasis, LLC and Rescue Biomedical, LLC and founding member and scientific advisor of Omniply Tech by Tandem Launch, Inc. He completed his postdoc in materials engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, received his PhD and MS in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University and BS in Mechanical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology. We had good results with this pilot study, taking in approximately 40 tickets and responding to them in a timely manner. We now want to officially launch this system for Birck-wide use, and to that end we will formally begin its use throughout Birck immediately after next week's PM shutdown. Therefore, on Monday, October 26 we are directing all equipment related issues to be reported using our ticketing system. During the ramp-up phase the staff members will continue to remind users to not use email, but rather the ticketing system. For the first month any email inquiries/reports will also be input into the ticket system, and after a month's time we will no longer accept email notices (after November 23). We realize this is a culture change for our facility and we will continue to remind users about the ticketing system as we go. Why are we doing this? We are always interested in improving our operations, and we know this will address our ability to know about issues quickly and address them responsively. We have benchmarked other facilities who use ticketing processes to their great benefit. Additionally our own ECN uses a similar ticketing system to address computer and network issues all across Purdue. Below is a message from Rich regarding the use of the ticketing system, and a link to the system. We look forward to your use of the system which will improve our engineering operations. Thanks for your assistance, Rich Hosler REM Cardboard Boxes Dear Birck Bio Lab Users- The Radiological & Environmental Management group at Purdue (REM) provides boxes to Birck that are used for disposing biohazard waste. These boxes are removed by REM when they're filled with autoclaved waste from our bio labs. It has come to our attention that someone has taken some of these boxes, presumably for personal use. Additionally a pack of the boxes was moved away from the autoclave to across the galley, making it inconvenient to fill the boxes after autoclave. Please do not take or relocate these REM hazardous waste boxes. They have a critical function in removing biohazardous waste for all the biolabs within Birck. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, October 19 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 23. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. Only authorized personnel will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, October 19 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 23. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical work will be allowed during this period. It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, October 23. But at the same time we want to remind our entire user group of the critical importance of following the COVID safety protocols while using our facilities. If an outbreak of COVID exposures should happen at Birck there is a real possibility that we may need to close the facility again. So please read and support the following..... .....Some of our approved users are holding the doors open for others to enter the building. This may very well be a gesture of politeness to assist another, but it also can be perceived that non-approved people are entering our building with the assistance of one of our approved users. Additionally it does not allow us to have an accurate accounting of who is entering our building by evaluating card-swipe data. So everyone should swipe into Birck and not be let in by someone holding the door open. .....Face masks are required while in Birck. Approved users have been, and continue to be, strongly encouraged to bring their own face mask for their personal use while in the facility. At the entrances we have supplied quantities of disposable face masks for emergency use, but our supplies of these disposable masks are being depleted at the high rate of 300 - 400 masks per week. This rate of use seems exceptionally high when personal masks are strongly recommended. Please only take one mask from the supply, and only when you've forgotten your personal mask. ....Social distancing continues to be a challenge. This is a difficult habit to develop and groups of people have been seen clustered around a tool, or having a hallway conversation, and not adhering to the 6' spacing rule. Please continue to maintain at least 6' spacing between yourself and the nearest other person. Please stay vigilant in promoting and supporting these safety protocols. Chen-Lung Hung Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy October 15th, 2020 | 12:00pm Join Zoom: https://purdue-edu.zoom.us/j/93857631004 Title: Engineering atom-nanphotonic hybrid lattices Abstract: Cold neutral atoms trapped and interfaced with light in photonic circuits form exciting hybrid quantum platforms for applications in quantum optics and quantum information science. The indistinguishability and long coherence time of neutral atoms makes an atom-nanophotonic hybrid platform inherently scalable, and by itself a strongly coupled many-body system. In this talk, I will describe the design and realization of an efficiently-coupled microring photonic quantum circuit for strong atom-light interactions. This novel photonic platform is compatible with cold atom physics, including laser cooling and trapping, and supports high microring coupling efficiency at relevant atomic spectral lines, thus holding promises for realizing a robust atom-nanophotonics hybrid quantum device. I will talk about our current progress in integrating this microring photonic circuit in a cold atom experiment and discuss about possible other applications in chiral quantum optics, cold molecule synthesis and quantum state detection. Bio: Chen-Lung Hung is an assistant professor of Physics and Astronomy at Purdue University. His research area includes ultracold atomic physics, quantum optics, and cold atom-photonics integration, with a special focus on interfacing ultracold atoms with nanophotonic circuits for quantum simulation of long-range quantum magnetism. His group is also using ultracold atoms trapped in optical lattices and optical tweezers to study quantum many-body dynamics and physics of strong correlation. For these projects, he is a recipient of the AFOSR young investigator award (2017), the NSF CAREER award (2019), and a Keck Foundation research grant (2019). Birck Nanotechnology Center PM Shut Down Notice October 19, 2020 – October 23, 2020 The Birck Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing a semi-annual preventive maintenance and service shutdown October 19 through October 23, 2020. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, October 19 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 23. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. Only authorized personnel will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, October 19 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 23. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical work will be allowed during this period. It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, October 23. Please check iLabs for equipment status and availability. For long term research planning please refer the following future dates for our future preventive maintenance shutdowns. Launch of New Equipment Support Ticketing System

Dear Birck User Community, As many of you know we have been running a pilot evaluation of our trouble-reporting 'ticketing' system that Rich Hosler and the engineering staff developed in June. We had good results with this pilot study, taking in approximately 40 tickets and responding to them in a timely manner. We now want to officially launch this system for Birck-wide use, and to that end we will formally begin its use throughout Birck immediately after next week's PM shutdown. Therefore, on Monday, October 26 we are directing all equipment related issues to be reported using our ticketing system. During the ramp-up phase the staff members will continue to remind users to not use email, but rather the ticketing system. For the first month any email inquiries/reports will also be input into the ticket system, and after a month's time we will no longer accept email notices (after November 23). We realize this is a culture change for our facility and we will continue to remind users about the ticketing system as we go. Why are we doing this? We are always interested in improving our operations, and we know this will address our ability to know about issues quickly and address them responsively. We have benchmarked other facilities who use ticketing processes to their great benefit. Additionally our own ECN uses a similar ticketing system to address computer and network issues all across Purdue. Below is a message from Rich regarding the use of the ticketing system, and a link to the system. We look forward to your use of the system which will improve our engineering operations. In general we envision this tool to be the first point of contact for any support requests regarding equipment or services inside BNC. I would ask that if you have any issues or questions regarding equipment in the Scifres Nanofabrication facility or with equipment residing in the BNC, please use the webpage below to submit a ticket. Chen-Lung Hung Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy October 15th, 2020 | 12:00pm Join Zoom: https://purdue-edu.zoom.us/j/93857631004 Title: Engineering atom-nanphotonic hybrid lattices Abstract: Cold neutral atoms trapped and interfaced with light in photonic circuits form exciting hybrid quantum platforms for applications in quantum optics and quantum information science. The indistinguishability and long coherence time of neutral atoms makes an atom-nanophotonic hybrid platform inherently scalable, and by itself a strongly coupled many-body system. In this talk, I will describe the design and realization of an efficiently-coupled microring photonic quantum circuit for strong atom-light interactions. This novel photonic platform is compatible with cold atom physics, including laser cooling and trapping, and supports high microring coupling efficiency at relevant atomic spectral lines, thus holding promises for realizing a robust atom-nanophotonics hybrid quantum device. I will talk about our current progress in integrating this microring photonic circuit in a cold atom experiment and discuss about possible other applications in chiral quantum optics, cold molecule synthesis and quantum state detection. Bio: Chen-Lung Hung is an assistant professor of Physics and Astronomy at Purdue University. His research area includes ultracold atomic physics, quantum optics, and cold atom-photonics integration, with a special focus on interfacing ultracold atoms with nanophotonic circuits for quantum simulation of long-range quantum magnetism. His group is also using ultracold atoms trapped in optical lattices and optical tweezers to study quantum many-body dynamics and physics of strong correlation. For these projects, he is a recipient of the AFOSR young investigator award (2017), the NSF CAREER award (2019), and a Keck Foundation research grant (2019).
