ADMINISTRATIVE OPERATIONS CONNECTION September 10, 2019 | For the campus and community Sidewalk restriction north of Bindley Bioscience Center on Thursday The section of sidewalk south of Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship and north of Bindley Bioscience Center will be restricted on Thursday (Sept. 12). Materials will be moved from the Aspire site, and an increase in truck traffic will be present in the area and along South Martin Jischke Drive. Motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians should use caution in the area and obey posted signs and flaggers. Dear Fellow Scientists, The 3D3C workshop on basic cell culture techniques is scheduled on September 26 and 27, 2019. Participation in the workshops requires having REM biosafety training and blood borne pathogen training. The course fee for the workshop is $250 (see flyer attached for more information). Sam is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research goal is to integrate shape memory alloys (SMAs) such as Nickel Titanium (Nitinol) with plasmonic antennas. The reason to do this is to allow for precise wireless control and feedback from SMA micromechanical devices. This will hopefully enable optical control of NiTi micromechanical devices. There will be a major electrical power outage involving all research equipment in the center. During our electrical bus duct failure back in February is was discovered that main power to all research equipment has the same issue that caused the failure in February. ELECTRICAL work is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, October 14, 2019. EVERY GENERAL LAB, MAIN CLEANROOM & BIO CLEANROOM AREAS WILL LOOSE POWER TO RESEARCH EQUIPMENT DURING THIS TIME. ALSO ALL BUILDING WIDE MAJOR UTILITIES WILL BE LOST INCLUDING Compressed Air, Process Vacuum, Process Cooling Water, Ultra Pure Water, Acid Waste System, & ETC. Research equipment on UPS or generator power will not be affected. Power will be lost to all conference rooms and office areas as well so please plan accordingly to safely power down all office computers and electronic devises in your offices prior to the outage. All air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, October 14 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 18 to complete our preventative maintenance activities. Registration for Purdue 2050: Conference of the Future

Dear BNC Colleagues, I would like to invite you to participate at “Purdue 2050: Conference of the Future” as part of Purdue University’s 150th anniversary on September 26-27, 2019. This is an ‘uncommon conference’ where participants will have an immersive experience in futuristic technology that should appear in 2030 to 2050. The primary objective is to organize a conference, as it would happen in the future. The conference will include a series of sessions designed to explore emerging technologies through the lens of critical issues such as privacy and community development. Sessions include: * Future of healthcare. Featuring Peter Embi, president of Regenstrief Institute, healthcare professionals (Burns -CSO Cerner and Chopra -CEO RadiantHeart), a leading cancer researcher (Matei) and her patient (Gubar), a well-known IU author and cancer survivor, * Supriyo Datta, will introduce Quantum Technologies to general public as taught in 2050. * Deborah Wince-Smith, President and CEO of the Council on Competitiveness will talk about Age of Illumination and some parallels with historical development in Renaissance. * Talks on Future of Manufacturing and Factories by Michael King, President of LHP Data Analytics and IoT Solutions, as well as Jan-Anders Mansson co-director of IMI (Indiana Manufacturing Institute). * Keynote talk on Digital Privacy by Alessandro Acquisti, a well known social scientist from Carnegie Mellon University * Talks on Smart Affordable Housing by Gary Hobbs (BWI) and on Discovery Park District 2050 by David Broecker * Presentations by Anna Ridler, an artist from London, who has an exhibit at Purdue Galleries on Art and Artificial Intelligence; as well as Purdue’s Anne Fliotsos on International Telepresence Theatre * Student Design Competition focused on Data and Business Analytics in collaboration with Krannert School of Management The conference room of the future at Honors Hall is designed in collaboration with Purdue’s Department of Art and Design. Students from Jan Allebach’s group will demonstrate video analytics of participants' facial expressions. This will provide real-time feedback to the speakers and audience, helping evaluate how new ideas are received. Exhibitions include Digital Borneo, immersive sounds from 100 million years old rainforest prepared in collaboration between Bryan Pijanowski’s Center for Soundscape Engineering and the newly developed transparent and flexible speakers fabricated by Miko Cakmak’s group at the Birck Center; Plasmonic Kaleidoscope/ Mandalas -a collaboration between Sasha Boltasseva’s nanophotonics researchers and a local artist, etc. Finally, Purdue Chef has designed a Special 2050 Menu for each of the meals. This won’t be a standard conference food! I hope you’ll join us on September 26-27. Registration is required; the cost is $40 for students, $100 for staff/faculty and $200 for outside participants.
