Greetings all, Fab Forum will be cancelled today. We'll pick back up next week with a talk by BNC Etch experts Francis Manfred and Neil Dilley on two of our new etch tools, the Plasma-Therm APEX SLR ICP Etcher and the AJA Ion Mill. Fab Forum is held Tuesdays at 3 PM in the BNC atrium, and allows BNC researchers a place to discuss their current problems, concerns, or successes with sample fabrication, characterization, or equipment use. The workshop will be located at BNC 1001 on Thursday, Nov. 14th at 10 a.m. The presentations will be divided in a morning session and a lunch session. The morning session will consist of a presentation from each member of the EM team introducing the instruments and the different imaging and chemical analysis capabilities related to the instruments. During the lunch session, current super-users will present a brief summary of what they have been able to achieve with these new capabilities during the last 6 months. In fact they've always been all around us but we haven't noticed. Despite their prevalence in science and engineering fields, they are not well understood-in large part because the fluid mechanics intuition developed in the study of macroscale flows frequently does not apply to microscopic flows. This class will prepare engineers and scientists to address problems they will encounter when studying the behavior of fluid flows in microscopic domains. The course will concentrate on behaviors not typically important at large length scales that become very important at small length scales, such as Van der Waals forces, surface tension, and electrostatic forces. The course will take a largely analytical approach to studying these flow phenomena although some computational modeling will also performed and several lab demos and visits are planned. Previous experience with graduate level fluid mechanics (i.e. Navier-Stokes solutions) or continuum mechanics will be helpful. Some computational analysis of model problems may be performed using commercial software (ANSYS/Fluent/COMSOL or related). Instructor: Steve Wereley, Mechanical Engineering (wereley(a)purdue.edu<mailto:wereley@purdue.edu>) Course Objectives: 1. To learn how fluids behave in microscopic domains that are still large enough for continuum flow approximations to hold. 2. To learn where the continuum assumptions are no longer valid. 3. To learn how to treat sub-continuum fluid flows. Prerequisites by Topic: The student should be of graduate standing. The student should have had some previous experience with graduate level fluid mechanics, in particular solving the Navier-Stokes equations. Computer Usage: The students may need to use ANSYS, Matlab, Fluent, COMSOL or a comparable package, to perform some of the computations necessary for the course. Assessment Methods: Grades will be based on homework assignments, two projects, and a final exam. The relative weight of these components is 25%, 50%, and 25%, respectively. Jischke Drive Repairs - April - August, 2020 Project Overview South Martin Jischke Drive from State Street to Harrison Street will be repaired next year, and utility work in the area will also occur. This section of South Martin Jischke Drive will be closed in phases while work is ongoing, and some adjacent sidewalk and ramps will be unavailable. We will be constructing a pedestrian "bump out" on the east and west side where the cross walks are located. The bump out will improve pedestrian safety. We will also be adding a short section of bike lane that will connect the existing bike lane that dead ends at the south end of Burton Morgan Dr. with bike lane at the corner of State and Jischke. Project Schedule While we are still in the design phase and the schedule is not yet final, we anticipate sidewalk repairs and utility work will begin in April 2020 with road closures beginning in May. Road work will be completed in two phases after spring commencement and before Boiler Gold Rush in August. The first phase will close northern half of the road from State Street to just south of the TERY parking lot entrance. This section will be reopened after repairs are complete, and then the remaining portion of South Jischke Drive from south of the TERY parking lot to Harrison Street will close for repairs. Access to TERY will be maintained throughout the project. Parking along Jischke will not be available during construction. Our Request for Your Participation To streamline feedback, occupants should communicate needs and concerns for April-August 2020 with their assigned building deputy. 3D Cell Culture Training Workshop - December 3&4 2019 - 2nd round of Announcement

Dear Fellow Scientists, A new round of 3D3C workshop on basic 3D cell culture techniques is scheduled on December 3 & 4, 2019. The workshop will cover some basic techniques for work with tumors or other types of tissues that require the formation of masses or spheroids. The prerequisites to attend the workshop are sufficient knowledge in standard (2D) cell culture techniques, REM biosafety training and blood-borne-pathogen training. The course fee for the workshop is $350 (see flyer attached for more information). The registration deadline is November 18, 2019. Dear Colleagues, The Office of the Executive Vice President for Research (EVPRP) is hosting Dr. Byron Knight, Chief Scientist, National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), on campus next Wednesday, November 6, 2019. Dr. Knight will present a general overview of the NRO from 10:15-11:15am in the Wilmeth Active Learning Center (WALC), Room 3090. All faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students are invited to attend. Topics include the history and role of the NRO, its mission, and employment and research opportunities within their organization. Dr. Knight is a US Department of Defense Intelligence Senior Leader, currently serving as the Chief Scientist in the Advanced Systems and Technology (AS&T) Directorate at the NRO in Chantilly, Virginia. He is the principal advisor to the Director for emerging science, technology, engineering and mathematics capabilities related to space reconnaissance. Previously to joining AS&T, Byron held numerous positions in the NRO Systems Engineering Directorate (SED). As the Deputy Director for Future Conflict Capabilities he was the principle technical advisor to the Director of Systems Engineering focused on improved reconnaissance systems and operations to address emerging tactical and operational military and intelligence needs.
