[cid:image003.jpg@01D404C4.4DF48A80] Seminars/Workshops/News Birck Research Symposium September 19, 2018 8:00am - 1:30pm BRK 1001 Speakers will include all of our staff scientists (Dima, Alex, Rosa, Nithin, Neil, Nick, Yi ) and Tim (for 3D cell culture lab) to each give a 30-min invited talk (24-min presentation + 6 min Q&A) at this symposium. The 24-min presentation (perhaps ~20-30 slides or so) will include ~12 min overview of the corresponding "Birck service" --- lab facilities/capabilities/type of services or processes provided, followed by (~12 min) some examples/highlights of research work ("science") done by the staff scientist and supported users (faculty groups) using the facilities or services. In some cases such as the upcoming Themis TEM, it may include examples (elsewhere) of the kind of research/science that can be enabled by such facilities that we may expect to see in near future. The talks will be recorded by nanoHub and (along with slides) put on Birck website to be viewed by people who may not make to the symposium as well as to show case our capabilities to attract more users (both from campus as well as outside Purdue). A short panel discussion including all speakers are also planned at the end of the symposium. Coffee and Lunch may be provided. These new dry pumps have replaced the oil-based mechanical pumps previously used. The Lesker is undergoing this change as well. This is a great improvement and will eliminate the backstreaming of pump oil into the chambers, resulting in cleaner processes and better uptime. The AJA Ion Mill is down due to a specialty part being broken off the loading/unloading mechanism. A new part is being supplied by AJA but it is out of stock and a custom-made component. They're estimating 3-4 weeks for delivery. Birck PM Shutdown Notice The Birck Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing a semi-annual preventive maintenance and service shutdown October 15 through October 19, 2018. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, October 15 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 19. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. Only authorized personnel will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, October 15 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 19. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical work will be allowed during this period. It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, October 19. Please check iLabs for equipment status and availability. For long term research planning please refer the following future dates for our future preventive maintenance shutdowns. Hello everyone, One of the things which NSAC is focusing this year is to improve the sports participation of people from Birck. We would like to know people who are interested in playing any sports as a recreational activity and also if they want to participate in the intramurals held at Purdue for which NSAC will fund the registration fee. We would like to get response from everyone (including postdocs, professors, grad students and staff ) to see who all are interested in different sports. You don't need to be very good at any sports, we all are just playing for fun. The new seal has finally been shipped and should arrive within the next several days. It is being shipped from Europe so additional shipment time is expected. Panasonic Etcher The Panasonic etcher is now fully operational, including BCl3 processing. The BCl3 gas was restored late last week. Parking As a reminder, 2017-18 parking permits expire Aug. 15, and purchase and activation of new parking permits is required to continue parking in these areas after that date. License plates must face the drive lane, and in most cases, backing into a parking space may result in receiving a citation. New User Process Meeting For several months we have required all new cleanroom users to have a process discussion meeting with members of the engineering staff. This used to be optional, but since we made it mandatory we have noticed a great improvement in how all our new users get off to a great start in their processing research with the help and mentoring of engineering staff members. We have now formalized the process by calling it "BNC 200: New User Process Meeting." This is now on our training website and is a prerequisite for enrolling in "BNC 206: Cleanroom Training." By making this small change we believe we will enhance the new user experience even more by making each new researcher more aware of the processing environment before they enter the cleanroom. We are sensitive to the need to get all orientation trainings done in one day (typically Thursdays) so we're scheduling new user process meetings at 1:00 on Thursdays in order to accommodate cleanroom training later that afternoon. This change goes into effect immediately. Birck Engineering Staff Call for Proposals The Walther Oncology Physical Sciences & Engineering Research Embedding Program is looking for collaborative projects between Purdue and Indiana University Simon Cancer Center (IUSCC) on cancer research. Please see attachment Course Offering Professor Helen McNally is offering ENGT-56100, Metrology Concepts this Fall semester. The Science of Measurements is an essential aspect to any science, engineering or technology research. This course introduces the concepts of metrology to include measurement systems (sensors and signal conditioning), data acquisition and analysis, and error propagation. Systems and environmental noise are investigated along with methods to mitigate influences of noise. Standards and calibration of instrumentation are also studied. Instrumentation for electrical and mechanical measurements are studied along with their corresponding measurement standards. These concepts of metrology are described from the macro to nano scale. Organ-on-a-Chip-Training-Workshop-September-13-14 2018 - 2nd Announcement

Dear Fellow Scientists, Recent advances in cell biology, microfabrication and microfluidics have enabled the development of microengineered and controlled models of the functional units of human organs — known as organs-on-a-chip or tissue-chips. The 3D3C workshop on organs-on-a-chip (initially scheduled in April, but postponed due to lecturer availability), will be offered on September 13 & 14, 2018. The workshop will include a lecture, classroom exercises, demonstrations and hands-on practical, covering the basic setup and modern approaches for the design of organs-on-a-chip. It will encompass aspects of substrates used in organs-on-a-chip, microfluidic systems, culture surface geometry and biosensors. During the lecture portion of the workshop we will also discuss differences between organoids and organs- or tissue-chips. For details, please refer to the attached pamphlet. Interior window cleaning-starting tomorrow

Everyone, This notice is to anyone that has an office with an exterior window facing directly to the outside. Building Services plans to provide INTERIOR cleaning of EXTERIOR windows, as our resources allow. BRK is next building in our list, and we would like to start there in the next day or two, possibly Friday morning (8/10/18). We will start on the top floor and will work our way around to the rooms that have exterior windows, and move to the next floor down until we complete the building. This should include all rooms that have blinds, or windows to the outside. It does not include things like door glass, or interior walls made of glass. The cleaning will take place between the hours of 5:00 AM and 1:30 PM, Monday - Friday. The door to each room will be left as we find it: if locked, we will lock it again when we leave. If unlocked, we will leave it unlocked. If you could please have all items removed from the windowsills that would be very much appreciated. We cannot clean windows that have obstacles in front of the glass. If our crewmembers arrive to clean a window and the occupant does not want them cleaned, we will pass on to the next room. Will you notify the building occupants please so they will be prepared for our visit? This will take more than one day to complete the building. If you have any question, please do not hesitate to contact me.
