Dear Users This email is the latest update about the electron microscopes in BRK Electron Microscopy Core. If you are not a user of EM core, I do apologize for the bothering. * Hitachi S-4800 SEM and EDX system Due to a vacuum issue, the SEM is down now. We are contacting the engineer to get the problem solved. So the SEM is offline now. Once it is fixed, you will receive another email about the latest update.Sorry for the inconvenience. The EDX system is in iLab system now and the usage is being charged now. So when you log in, you can go to the Equipment by Category--->Scanning Electron Microscope---> EDX-Hitachi S-4800 to create a session for EDX while you are using SEM. So if you are trained on EDX, please send an email to Xingtao Liu (liu1749(a)purdue.edu) so that he can add you to the iLab system. In the email, please mention that who provided the training. Thank you for your cooperation. * FEI Nova DualBeam SEM/FIB The FIB in BRM EM Core is still operational and the manipulator for Lift-out is working fine. We have not got a date for the move of Nova yet, so we will still have it operational for at least another 30 days. So if you need it, you can still use it at Birck. * FEI Titan TEM The tip on Titan has been changed, however, we still have some issues after changing the tip. The system crashed last Friday so we still need two or three weeks to get the problem solved. Sorry for the inconvenience. If there are any questions, please let me know. Best, Xingtao Liu

3D Cell Culture Training Workshop - March 22 & 23 2018

Dear Fellow Scientists, The 3D3C workshop on basic 3D cell culture techniques is scheduled on March 22 & 23, 2018. The workshop will cover some basic techniques for work with tumors or other types of tissues that require the formation of masses or spheroids. The prerequisites to attend the workshop are sufficient knowledge in standard (2D) cell culture techniques, REM biosafety training and blood-borne-pathogen training. The course fee for the workshop is $350 (see flyer attached for more information). The registration deadline is March 2 2018. If you are interested or have questions, please feel free to contact me. Nowadays XPS has become a standard technique for the characterization of solid surfaces. However, XPS data require thorough analysis using a dedicated software. Purdue University has a site license for CasaXPS allowing to perform a complete analysis of XPS data. The course aims to teach (1) what analysis should be applied to raw XPS data and (2) how this can be done using CasaXPS. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of XPS data using CasaXPS will be discussed in detail as well. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops to follow data analysis using CasaXPS. The way this cap has been working is as follows: If any one student working on one research project reached $13K in charges during a fiscal year, then additional access & equipment charges for the remainder of that fiscal year were waived (covered by other Birck funds). Going forward we will retain the $13K cap as usual, but if any student continues to use facilities at a high rate and accumulates an additional $15K in non-paid use, then the normal use rates will resume again at that $28K accumulated level. In other words for a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30), work between $0 - $13K is paid at normal rates. Then work done between $13K - $28K is at no charge, and any work continuing above $28K resumes charging at the normal rates. This is essentially a cap on the cap and it will begin February 1, 2018. The error cleared and the system worked as normal over the rest of the weekend. On Monday the system encountered a persistent error where the chamber heater read as under temperature. It is my suspicion that the heater has failed, and will need replacement. I have forwarded these details, along with tool recipes and sensor readouts to Panasonic support, seeking their recommendations. Typically they reply in a week. I also plan on physically inspecting the heater and thermocouples after I have finished repairing the AOE. In the event we have to order replacement OEM parts from Panasonic we might be facing several week delays, although I will inquire about rush options. In the event the Panasonic is down long term the STS AOE (expected to be back online next week) has similar capability, minus the availability of process gases CHF3, BCl3, and Cl2. That functionality can be found at neighboring universities, which can be contacted below. It might be prudent to contact them and discuss your needs now in the event of major equipment failure and long delays.
