Dear Fellow Scientists, Recent advances in cell biology, microfabrication and microfluidics have enabled the development of microengineered and controlled models of the functional units of human organs — known as organs-on-a-chip. The new 3D3C workshop on organ-on-a-chip is scheduled for April 5 & 6 2018. The workshop will include a lecture, classroom exercises, demonstrations and hands-on practical covering the basic setup and modern approaches for the design of organ-on-a-chip. It will encompass aspects of substrates used in organs-on-a-chip, microfluidic systems, culture surface geometry and biosensors. For details, please refer to the attached pamphlet. Since 2010, the Birck Nanotechnology Center at Discovery Park has participated in NISE NanoDays, a program that promotes science and technology education nationwide. Volunteers will staff activity stations and assist visitors as they investigate different scientific concepts. Some example activities for 2018 include gummy capsules, ferrofluids, invisibility, thin film bookmarks, oobleck, and UV bead bracelets. No prior knowledge is required to volunteer, just an enthusiasm for science and science education. Local vendors will be providing food for volunteer training and all three days of the event. Volunteers can attend any or all of the following shifts: Wed 4/11/18: 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM Thu 4/12/18: 8:45 AM - 11:30 AM 11:15 AM - 2:00 PM Fri 4/13/18: 8:45 AM - 11:30 AM 11:15 AM - 2:00 PM Training is mandatory and will be provided in the Birck atrium. Second Floor Heating Water Shutdown - Wed. 2/28/18 This is notification of an upcoming shutdown to replace a leaking fitting on the circulating hot water loop serving the second floor west side laboratories, offices, and galley. We have taken measures to stop the leak for the short term, but they are temporary fixes and will not hold for long. We plan to make permanent repairs on Wednesday 2/28/18 beginning around 8:00 AM. This could take eight hours or perhaps more. During the repairs, the supply air coming to the affected labs and offices will be 55 degrees F. Offices will be cold during this time. If the labs have a high ambient heat load, they may not notice much difference. However if the ambient heat load is low, the lab will almost certainly cool down. Condensation may also be a possibility. Please review your equipment and let us know as soon as possible if you foresee any issues that would result from this shutdown. 3D Cell Culture Training Workshop - March 22 & 23 2018 - 2nd Announcement

Dear Fellow Scientists, The 3D3C workshop on basic 3D cell culture techniques is scheduled on March 22 & 23, 2018. The workshop will cover some basic techniques for work with tumors or other types of tissues that require the formation of masses or spheroids. The prerequisites to attend the workshop are sufficient knowledge in standard (2D) cell culture techniques, REM biosafety training and blood-borne-pathogen training. Fewer infractions and more careful and organized user culture will lead directly to more successful processing for everyone, reduced tool downtime, and more time for our hard-working staff to work with users to develop and characterize processes, exchange ideas, and install new tools for increased capability in Birck. We hope that clearly delineated discipline procedures will help educate users, and train them to be world-class researches in micro/nanoscale science and technology. Please read through this document, put together after much consideration by the Disciplinary Committee headed by Prof. Amy Marconnet. It will be posted on the Birck wiki shortly, and is effective immediately. Thank you to everyone for helping to make Birck such a creative, collaborative place. Update for SEM in BRK Electron Microscopy Core

Dear SEM users We received several inquiries about the SEM condition. The pump in SEM is down so we can not evacuate the chamber. So the engineer will bring a new pump and change it on Wednesday. Hopefully, we can get it fixed before Thursday. If so, the machine can be back on Thursday. I will keep you updated about the conditions of SEM and TEM in BRK Electron Microscopy Core. Parking Bicycles at Discovery Park

Everyone, I am so sorry for the inconvenience of the bike racks being fenced in during the construction. Physical facilities has placed a bike rake between Bindley and Birck for you to park your bikes. After today, if you are parked anywhere other than the bike racks, your bike will be moved by grounds. Improperly parked bikes (i.e., bikes parked anywhere other than a bicycle rack) are subject to removal. Please let me know if you have any questions.
