Spring PM Shutdown - May 1, 2017 - May 5, 2017 The Birck Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing a semi-annual preventive maintenance and service shutdown May 1 through May 5, 2017. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, May 1 through 4 p.m. Friday, May 5. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. Only authorized personnel will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, May 1 through 4 p.m. Friday, May 5. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical work will be allowed during this period. It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, May 5. Please check iLabs for equipment status and availability. For long-term research planning, please refer the following future dates for our future preventive maintenance shutdowns. Fume Hood Login Required

All, Due to continued cleanliness and safety issues with the hoods both in the cleanroom and general laboratories the following procedure is to be implemented immediately. Before using any fume hood in Birck the user must sign into the log posted on the fume hood and upon completion of use of the hood sign out. Vibration Alert - Demolition of Housing North of the BNC - Update

All BNC Users: A vibratory roller will be utilized to backfill the basements from the demolished student housing which could cause significant vibrations for research. Backfill work will start in front of the center and move west. Hopefully vibration will decrease as the vibrator roller moves farther away from the center. Subject: PVIL Demolition | Next Week Look Ahead Mark, Per our discussion, here is a look ahead for next week: We expect that heavy demo will commence on or after 3-13-17 at the far East end in front of Birck and will progress East to West toward Airport road. The buildings are masonry and concrete floor plates on bar joists and will come done easily. In the process of bringing them down it is possible that large sections of masonry wall or the floor plates will impact with the ground causing vibrations. The work hours will be 7 am to 5:30 pm M-F and the possibility of Saturday work as well. Within each building is a slab on grade and also a basement which will have to be demolished and could also cause some vibrations. The basement areas and utility trenches will have to be backfilled in lifts and vibratory compaction equipment will be used and will cause vibrations. We are currently erecting silt fence and other erosion control measures and installing tree protection fencing and other site prep, asbestos abatement and utility disconnections from the buildings. Misplaced Cleanroom Notebook

Dear Birck research community, Please see the below note from Ward Newman, a researcher in the Jacob group. He believes he set his notebook down somewhere near the photolithography area and someone may have inadvertently gathered it up and put it away in a bin. Please check your bins and contact Ward immediately if you find it.
