Dear all Birck Faculty, Staff, and Students: This year the NanoDays extravaganza will be held on Thursday and Friday, April 6th and 7th at the Birck Nanotechnology Center from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm each day. As in previous years we will be hosting hundreds of school children from many different Indiana schools, and it promises to be a very fun time. Please note there is a special event the evening of Wednesday, April 5th, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, for Birck Family members and Girl Scout Troops. This is your opportunity to bring family members to participate in all the NanoDays activities in a semi-private setting, so mark this evening on your calendars and bring your young scientists and engineers into Birck for a very enjoyable and stimulating evening! Participants will have the opportunity to: * Gain professional experience explaining scientific concepts to people from non-technical backgrounds. * Support the future of STEM programs by introducing grade schoolers and high school students to the miniscule world of atoms, molecules, and nanoscale forces. * Participate with other students/researchers in a nationwide festival celebrating nanotechnology science and education. Since 2010, the Birck Nanotechnology Center at Discovery Park has participated in NISE NanoDays, a program that promotes science and technology education nationwide. Volunteers will staff activity stations and assist visitors as they investigate different scientific concepts. Some example activities for 2017 include static electricity, DNA, and ultraviolet light. No prior knowledge is required to volunteer, just an enthusiasm for science and science education. Local vendors will be providing food for volunteer training and all three days of the event. Oxide Uniformity Issue A student brought to the attention of the engineering staff a non-uniform oxide growth within one of the Protemp furnaces. A structured problem solving approach was used to design experiments to troubleshoot multiple hardware components within the furnace. Several oxidation runs within the design of experiments brought attention to the furnace door hardware. It was discovered the compression spring that ensures the furnace door is fully closed had relaxed, thus causing the door to remain ajar which caused different gas flow dynamics. The door spring was replaced, and oxidations are now back to within specification of 1.5% within wafer uniformity (down from 15%). Furthermore, proactive policies have been placed within the furnaces to ensure this failure mode does not repeat itself. Please report any problems (hardware or process problems) to the staff to ensure a timely fix.

Interiors windows being cleaned starting next week.

Building Services plans to provide interior cleaning of EXTERIOR windows, as our resources allow. BRK is next building in our list, and we would like to start there in the next few days, possibly Monday morning (2/20/17). We will start on the top floor and will work our way around to the rooms that have exterior windows, and move to the next floor down until we complete the building. This should include all rooms that have blinds, or windows to the outside. It doesn't include things like door glass, or interior walls made of glass. The cleaning will take place between the hours of 5:00 AM and 1:30 PM, Monday - Friday. The door to each room will be left as we find it: if locked, we will lock it again when we leave. If unlocked, we will leave it unlocked. If you could please have all items removed from the window sills that would be very much appreciated. We can't clean windows that have obstacles in front of the glass. If our crew members arrive to clean a window and the occupant doesn't want them cleaned, we will pass on to the next room. Cell Line Database

Dear Colleague, The 3D3C (3D Cell Culture Core) facility plans on setting up a database of cell lines available in the research laboratories of Purdue University, with information on their use in 3D culture if applicable and on culture protocols. We are hoping that this database will foster new collaborations among scientists at Purdue. The database will remain confidential. Upon request by a Purdue scientist, we will search the database to identify the cell lines available to fit her/his needs, then contact the individual faculty who has the cell line of interest, and upon her/his approval send the contact information to the requester in order for the two laboratories can interact. We are emailing you to ask for three minutes of your time to answer the survey below (it will ask notably, which cell lines you have available, if you are using a serum free culture medium or not, and if you are using these cells in 3D culture). Use of Birck facilities

Dear Members of the BNC Research Community, It has been brought to our attention that some researchers have been using Birck equipment without logging into our equipment scheduling systems (previously Coral, now transitioning to iLabs). This prevents proper scheduling and billing. Violating this policy prevents us from properly charging the appropriate grants/contracts as the rates are determined based on expenses and income for each equipment. This may jeopardize the Birck financial and legal status. We urge everyone in the community to make an effort to properly use these tools in order to avoid such issues. We hope everyone understands that willingly violating this policy may result in not only burdening other groups with higher rates but also problems with the federal and state governments as well. Cleanroom Printer A user brought to our attention an issue with the gowning room printer. It frequently jams when cleanroom paper is fed through. Birck uses a couple of different cleanroom papers, so Lorraine is going to consult with local printer suppliers, and actually take samples of our papers to them, in order to find a suitable printer for our needs. Headphones in the Cleanroom Though we don't have an official policy against the use of headphones in the cleanroom. We would strongly discourage there use. The staff has observed situations on a number of occasions where individuals have almost run into each other because one of the two were listening to headphones. With the use of chemicals and delicate samples being processed it only stands to reason that this distraction could have a negative impact on the operations of the cleanroom, especially form a safety standpoint. Physical Vapor Deposition Run Durations We received an input this week about pumping speeds of our various PVD systems (evaporators and sputtering systems). We are evaluating these to see if it makes sense to adjust the standard run times per equipment. SEMINAR Flat Photonics Using High Contrast Metastructures Connie J. Chang-Hasnain Electrical Engineering and Computer Science University of California, Berkeley, CA Monday, Feb 13 from 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM Birck 1001 A new class of planar optics has emerged using near-wavelength structures with a large refractive index contrast with its surroundings, known as high contrast metastructures (HCM). Many extraordinary properties can be designed top-down based for integrated optics on a silicon substrate. Using a 1D HCM (known as high contrast gratings) as a high reflectivity mirror, we demonstrated wavelength- sweptable vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) with 10 MHz tuning speed and continuous tuning range. Such wavelength-swept lasers have applications for data communications, LIDAR and optical coherent tomography applications. A single layer HCG can also be designed as high quality-factor surface-normal resonators. I will review recent results using and its applications as biosensor, 4-wave generation, and spatial light modulator. Finally, we also demonstrated a novel design that mimics the color tuning effect of chameleon skin with color change achieved simultaneously in a multiple-color pattern flat structure. In this talk, I will review the physics, experimental demonstrations and novel applications.
