Alam) Exploring Multidisciplinary Discussions: “Structuring international collaborative network for development of future reliability engineering physics no multi-phase interfaces and the physical system" (1) KOJI ERIGUCHI, Professor Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Kyoto University Kyoto daigaku-Katsura, Nishikyo-ku, Kyoto 615-8540, JAPAN “Plasma–solid interactions and its nano-scale evaluation techniques” Understanding plasma–solid is of great importance for industrial and space applications. Low pressure plasma processing has been now widely employed in the field of nanotechnologies, in particular, the leading-edge electronic device manufacturing. Material surfaces exposed to plasmas (~ 5 nm thick) are suffering from the generation of defects due to high-energy ion bombardments and charge-up damage, which leads to the degradation of designed performance and reliability lifetime. This talk covers these mechanisms with an emphasis placed on plasma-induced damage (PID) in advanced electronic devices (the PID range theory), and discusses how we should quantify and design PID for realizing advanced plasma processes and highly reliable materials (e.g., boron nitride) implemented into space technologies in future. (2) KAZUYA TATSUMI, Associate Professor Department of Mechanical Engineering and Science, Kyoto University Kyoto daigaku-Katsura, Nishikyo-ku, Kyoto 615-8540, JAPAN “Micro-Transport with Microfluidics” Microfluidics have innovated various applications in terms of miniaturizing the system, reducing the measurement time and cost, and enhancing the accuracy, and have made a large contribution to the fields of chemistry, heat transfer, medicine and biology. One important phenomenon in microfluidics and related micro-devices is the transports of mass, heat, chemical components and micro-scale objects which can be enhanced, suppressed and controlled with high accuracy due to the scale effects. We have been working on developing microfluidic devices that can control the transport phenomena in and by the microchannel flow. In this talk, I will introduce the microfluidic techniques we have been studying: one for fluid mixing enhancement using viscoelastic fluid and serpentine channel, and the other for high throughput (1,000cells/s) biological cell alignment and sorting system using dielectrophoretic force and micro electrodes.

Evaporation Sources We're developing a solution to publish the current source lists on the Birck Website, which is generally undergoing a major revamping. Once the new website is launched it will include the source listings and then anyone can remotely access the site to view current source listings. In the meantime we always mail out the updated source lists to each evaporator email distribution whenever source materials are changed. Please watch for these emails, and make sure they aren't going to your spam file. NSAC together with Indiana Blood Center is organizing a Discovery Park Blood Drive. The date of the event is Wednesday, September 21, 2016. Statistically, every 2 seconds, somebody in the U.S. needs blood. Indiana Blood Center takes an active part towards meeting such high demands and has hosted blood drives with 1914 organizations. This would be a great opportunity for all the people at Birck Nanotechnology Center to contribute towards the medical welfare of the society at large. Magnetic stripe commercial purchasing, travel cards will be cancelled for cardholders with chip cards beginning September 19 Several months ago, J.P. Morgan Chase issued commercial chip enabled credit cards (both purchasing cards and travel cards) to replace magnetic stripe cards. Their records show that not all of the chip cards have been activated, and some cardholders are still using their magnetic stripe card. What to expect * Beginning September 19, cardholders who have both a magnetic stripe and a chip card will have the magnetic stripe card cancelled. * After September 19, if a cardholder attempts to use the magnetic stripe card, transactions will be declined with a reason code of "expiration date invalid". * Any existing transactions on the magnetic stripe card will transfer to the chip card. What staff and cardholders need to do By September 19, contact cardholders and instruct them to activate and begin using the chip card as soon as possible. 1. A chip card has not been sent out for all cards. * If a chip card has been received, it needs to be activated, as the magnetic stripe card that it replaced will no longer work as of September 19. (Most of the cards replaced so far have been for those who travel and study abroad) * Magnetic stripe cards that have not been replaced with a chip card will receive the chip card upon its natural renewal date, so there is no action to take at this time. Notification of Scheduled work on 9-16 thru 9-18

WORK TO BE PERFORMED: From 12:00 AM to 5:00 AM on 9/16/16, the ITaP Data Networks Team will be performing the work necessary to resolve an existing bug situation on a campus router. AFFECTED CLIENTS: It is hoped that this work will have no impact on client services however it is possible that if success is not achieved via the first couple steps of the work plan then an additional more severe step will need to be taken. If that were to end up being the case, that step will cause service disruptions for the following items: 1. ns4 Blue Cat server 2. Google Cache 3. Wintek backup link SCOPE OF WORK: During the scheduled outage window, affected client(s) will ideally experience no service outage but if the more disruptive step referred to above ends up being necessary, clients should plan to experience 1 or 2 service disruptions lasting up to 1 hour in total duration. Even in such a scenario it is possible that many affected clients will not experience a true outage but may just notice slower response times during the scheduled work. WORK TO BE PERFORMED: From 12:00 AM to 6:00 AM on 9/17/16, the ITaP Data Networks Team will be performing work that will cause a disruption of DNS/DHCP services. AFFECTED CLIENTS: All campus clients should plan to experience disruption of DNS/DHCP services. SCOPE OF WORK: Sometime during the scheduled outage window, affected client(s) should plan to experience a disruption of DNS services lasting up to 1 minute in duration and a disruption of DHCP services lasting up to 5 minutes in duration. WORK TO BE PERFORMED: From 12:00 AM to 6:00 AM on 9/18/16, the ITaP Data Networks Team will be performing work that will cause a disruption of campus PAL wireless network service. AFFECTED CLIENTS: All campus clients should plan to experience disruption of PAL wireless service. SCOPE OF WORK: Sometime during the scheduled outage window, affected client(s) should plan to experience a disruption of PAL wireless network service lasting up to 15 minutes in duration.
