*********************** Dear Colleagues, I just would like to attract your attention to two XPS workshops coming in October-November, 2016. Every research group using or planning to use Surface Analysis characterization tools should have at least one trained student. 1) Introduction to XPS workshop - What you should know about X-ray pohotoelectron spectroscopy (http://bit.ly/1eqIM8U<https://purdue.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_2aEjFISmtrn3IlD>), October 25-26 @ 9:00 AM - BRK 1001. Course Description: XPS is widely used to determine the chemical composition of a surface (element concentrations, chemical states, lateral and depth distributions, etc.). Nowadays XPS has become a standard technique for the characterization of solid surfaces. The course will teach how and what information can be provided by XPS. The quantification of the XPS data will be discussed in detail (thickness calculation, coverage, atomic percentage, etc.) 2) XPS Lite Workshop Introduction to CasaXPS (http://bit.ly/IYeOeu) November 1-2 @ 9:00 AM - BRK 1001. Course Description: XPS is widely used to determine the chemical composition of a surface (element concentrations, chemical states, lateral and depth distributions, etc.). Nowadays XPS has become a standard technique for the characterization of solid surfaces. However, XPS data require thorough analysis using a dedicated software. Purdue University has a site license for CasaXPS allowing to perform a complete analysis of XPS data. The course aims to teach (1) what analysis should be applied to raw XPS data and (2) how this can be done using CasaXPS. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of XPS data using CasaXPS will be discussed in detail as well. Travel Changes Lost Item Automated Piranha Cleaning Station Hot Plates for TMAH Etching Housekeeping Issues Coral Log-Ins Seminar Birck Shut Down Travel Changes Changes in the travel industry have prompted some changes to the Purdue travel guidelines that will be effective for travel on or after October 1, 2016. These changes are designed to make travel and expense reporting easier for our travelers, as well as the delegates who support those travelers. Here is a list of the upcoming changes: * E-Z Pass devices in rental cars will now be a reimbursable expense. * All air tickets that indicate "economy" or "coach" will be reimbursable, i.e. "economy plus". This includes fees for seat selection when booking economy or coach airfares. * Early Check-In Fees - for those airlines that do not assign seats (i.e. Southwest) or those that do not assign seats until check-in (i.e. Frontier), early check-in fees will be reimbursable. NOTE: This does not include early boarding fees when seats have been assigned. * TSA and Global Entry - Heightened security and long lines have resulted in much time wasted getting through TSA. For those travelers who fly three or more times per year, TSA Pre-check and Global Entry enrollment fees will be reimbursable. * Cost Comparisons will be eliminated for domestic trips (inside the continental United States), and replaced with a maximum reimbursable amount. The maximum amount reimbursable will be determined annually by the Central Travel Office based on the average ticket costs reporting by the US Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics. For the remainder of 2016, $400 will be the maximum amount allowed when a cost comparison would have been required. * Drive vs. Fly comparisons will also be eliminated - the maximum amount reimbursable for drive vs. fly will be $500. This is also calculated based on the average ticket costs reported by the US Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics, with an additional $100 to consider mileage and parking that would have been incurred. For questions or concerns please contact the business office. Lost Item If you recently lost a multi-tool please see Heather. Must be able to identify brand. Automated Piranha Cleaning Station A user recommended we add an automated & designated piranha process station with quick-dump feature. We welcome this input and will put this on our forecasted equipment list for future procurement. Hot Plates for TMAH Etching A user mentioned that the two hotplates used for elevated temperature etching are beginning to malfunction. We will replace them with new, and thanks for bringing this to our attention. Housekeeping Issues A comment was made in this week's survey that incomplete clean-up of equipment and hoods continues to happen in the cleanroom. This is a continuing problem, and we ask again for everyone to clean up after themselves whenever their processing is complete. Please leave hoods and equipment in good working condition and clean for the next person. This is an absolute requirement for a multi-user facility such as ours. Coral Log-Ins Users have noticed that other users of our facility don't always enable and disable equipment use in Coral. This is a serious violation and can result in severe consequences. Please always use Coral to enable and disable equipment use. The new iLabs software package will deploy this winter to replace Coral, and equipment will be interlocked under this new scheme. NEMO5 and 2D materials: tuning band structures, wave functions and electrostatic screening Tillmann Kubis, Purdue University Wednesday, Oct. 5 from 3:30-4:30 PM Birck 2001 The successful isolation of graphene in 2004 opened up the exciting new research field of 2D materials. These materials host a long list of unique mechanical, electrical and chemical features that promise important device applications. Reliable performance predictions of 2D nanodevices must embrace coherent quantum mechanical effects (tunneling, confinement and interferences) atomistic effects (corrugation, subatomic confinement) and incoherent effects (phonon scattering and device imperfections). Subatomic resolution is needed, but techniques must be efficient enough to model real-size devices. Recently, the multipurpose simulation tool NEMO5 was augmented with the maximally localized Wannier function (MLWF) representation. This representation offers a good balance between numerical efficiency and subatomic resolution. MLWF parameterizations are highly transferable and free from ambiguities that have plagued empirical tight binding models. In this talk, I will briefly discuss the MLWF approach and compare it to DFT and atomistic tight binding. Initial results using the MLWF approach for 2D material based devices will be discussed and compared to experiments. These results unveil systematic band structure changes as functions of the layer thickness and the applied gate potential. The electrostatic response depends on the location of the band edges in the Brillouin zone, their degeneracy and associated wave functions. All these properties turn out to be tunable. Scattering rates, mobilities and density of states are tightly bound to such band structure details as well. Even the bandgap is a function of the layer thickness and the applied electric field. Fitting NEMO5's gate control of bandgaps to experimental data allows us to deduce the layer thickness dependence of the dielectric constant in the 2D materials. The enhancements discussed in this talk provide NEMO5 with the new capabilities needed to play an important role in the exploration of novel 2D devices. [cid:image002.jpg@01D21B1E.D50CF250]

Ira's Retiring All as of September 30th Ira Young will no longer be with us. Pleas congratulate him on his retirement and wish him the best. I would like to introduce his replacement Lorraine Fox, (foxl(a)purdue.edu<mailto:foxl@purdue.edu>) you may remember she was a past member of the staff down in the mailroom. She will be starting Monday September 26th please welcome her as she becomes acquainted with Ira's duties. Stephen Jurss Safety Officer Introducing iLab! As you may have heard, Purdue University is excited to start using iLab's Core Facility Management software, an online system to streamline the process of ordering and billing for core service requests. The implementation of the iLab solution will help Purdue facilitate its goals of increased core utilization/awareness, improved core financial management, and enhanced core user experience. This is a much improved and complete software package that will replace Coral here at Birck and will handle equipment reservations and scheduling as well as interface to the Purdue accounts system to seamlessly coordinate equipment billings and account management. In the upcoming weeks this system will be installed and rolled out here in our facility. Later this Fall/Winter our Coral system will be completely replaced by iLab. Watch for more announcements on implementation and deployment progress and if you have any questions please contact Jerry Shepard of the Engineering Staff. He is leading the iLab implementation effort for Birck. Refrigerator The kitchen refrigerator will be cleaned out at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 30th. Alam) Exploring Multidisciplinary Discussions: “Structuring international collaborative network for development of future reliability engineering physics no multi-phase interfaces and the physical system" (1) KOJI ERIGUCHI, Professor Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Kyoto University Kyoto daigaku-Katsura, Nishikyo-ku, Kyoto 615-8540, JAPAN “Plasma–solid interactions and its nano-scale evaluation techniques” Understanding plasma–solid is of great importance for industrial and space applications. Low pressure plasma processing has been now widely employed in the field of nanotechnologies, in particular, the leading-edge electronic device manufacturing. Material surfaces exposed to plasmas (~ 5 nm thick) are suffering from the generation of defects due to high-energy ion bombardments and charge-up damage, which leads to the degradation of designed performance and reliability lifetime. This talk covers these mechanisms with an emphasis placed on plasma-induced damage (PID) in advanced electronic devices (the PID range theory), and discusses how we should quantify and design PID for realizing advanced plasma processes and highly reliable materials (e.g., boron nitride) implemented into space technologies in future. (2) KAZUYA TATSUMI, Associate Professor Department of Mechanical Engineering and Science, Kyoto University Kyoto daigaku-Katsura, Nishikyo-ku, Kyoto 615-8540, JAPAN “Micro-Transport with Microfluidics” Microfluidics have innovated various applications in terms of miniaturizing the system, reducing the measurement time and cost, and enhancing the accuracy, and have made a large contribution to the fields of chemistry, heat transfer, medicine and biology. One important phenomenon in microfluidics and related micro-devices is the transports of mass, heat, chemical components and micro-scale objects which can be enhanced, suppressed and controlled with high accuracy due to the scale effects. We have been working on developing microfluidic devices that can control the transport phenomena in and by the microchannel flow. In this talk, I will introduce the microfluidic techniques we have been studying: one for fluid mixing enhancement using viscoelastic fluid and serpentine channel, and the other for high throughput (1,000cells/s) biological cell alignment and sorting system using dielectrophoretic force and micro electrodes.
