ECE 557 EQUIPMENT & ACCESSORIES FLEX LAB CONSTRUCTION ITaP DATA OUTAGE SEMINAR STARTING AS A NEW USER IN BIRCK ECE 557 EQUIPMENT & ACCESSORIES A few critical items from the ECE 557 process bay have gone missing. Included in these was an aligner chuck and a wafer carrier. Please note that any and all items in the 557 bay are for the lab portion of that class and should be left in that bay. If items are missing then the students can't do their processing during assigned lab hours. Thanks for your cooperation. FLEX LAB CONSTRUCTION Flex Lab Construction will begin Monday April 4th in back of Birck for the new Flex lab. The parking in the back of Birck (gravel and paved) will be closed. The west and north lots will still be available for parking. There may be some vibration concerns, but construction will be in contact with management to let us know if there will be any issues. New Bicycle Paths and Parking: An upcoming project in Discovery Park to install a bicycle lane between BIND and Mann and on the northwest corner of BRK. This project was scheduled for installation in the Fall of 2015, but was rescheduled to the Spring of 2016. Purdue Grounds will be performing the excavation and Purdue Masons will install the lanes. PUPF construction team will co-ordinate the scheduling of the excavation activities and will provide routine updates on the plans for excavation with BNC building manager. Light construction work will start the week of March 21. Excavation and concrete work will begin as soon as weather permits. We plan on having this work complete by the end of July 2016. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Mark Voorhis and Mary Jo Totten ITaP DATA OUTAGE WORK TO BE PERFORMED: From 11:00 PM to 11:59 PM on Thursday, 3/31/16, the ITaP Data Networks Team will be performing scheduled work that may cause a disruption of data network services for some clients. AFFECTED CLIENTS: It is possible that no noticeable disruption of services will occur during this scheduled work however if a service disruption does occur, all clients and services that utilize an ITaP Data Center firewall context will experience that disruption. SCOPE OF WORK: It is possible that no clients will experience a noticeable service disruption but if such does occur, affected client(s) should plan to experience a couple of service disruptions during the scheduled outage window, each disruption lasting up to 5 minutes in duration. [BRK/ECE/PHYS Seminar,March 24, 2016 @ 10:40am WANG 1004 ,Dr. Yongtao Cui Postdoc Fellow, Stanford University Title: Visualizing Magnetic and Electrical Phenomena in Nano Devices in Time and Space Domains] [Abstract: Current CMOS technology is approaching the scaling limit as set by the semiconductor physics. Exploring new materials as well as other physical interactions than the electron charge, thus provides opportunities to enable new device schemes and architectures with improved performance. In the course of such study, developing new characterization techniques plays an important role to achieve better understandings in device physics and identify new functionalities. In this talk, I will discuss two case studies in probing the magnetic and electrical properties in nano devices in both time and space domains. In the first part, I will present the study of the magnetic dynamics in spin torque devices where spin polarized electrons are used to efficiently manipulate the magnetic devices, such as inducing magnetic switching or precession. We developed single-shot time domain techniques to capture the ultrafast switching processes with unprecedented details. Furthermore, X-ray microscopy measurement is performed to resolve spatially and temporally the magnetic dynamics in a ferromagnetic nanopillar, revealing the structure of the magnetic normal modes excited by spin torque. In the second part, I will introduce a new type of interface conduction at the magnetic domain walls in a magnetic insulator with strong spin-orbit coupling, Nd2Ir2O7. We used Microwave Impedance Microscopy, a scanning probe microscopy technique capable of imaging nanoscale electrical conductivity, to identify such conductive states and perform comprehensive study of its behaviors. We propose that such feature can be potentially used to achieve memory device applications beyond current CMOS scaling barrier.] [Bio: Yongtao Cui received his BS in physics from Peking University in 2005, and his PhD in applied physics from Cornell University in 2011. Cell Culture Basics Training Workshop -- May 19 & 20 2016

Dear Fellow Scientists, The 3D3C facility held its first Cell Culture Basics - Training Workshop in February this year. Due to the high demand, the workshop will be held again in March and in April. Some of those interested would like to have another workshop scheduled after Spring semester to avoid overlapping with regular classes. Therefore the 3D3D facility will organize a workshop on May 19 and 20 to accommodate the needs and this workshop is open for registration. Please see the pamphlet below for details. Construction of Flex Lab SEMINAR Construction of Flex Lab The Flex Lab will be a new advanced laboratory building located south of (behind) the Birck Nanotechnology Center. It will face Gates Drive, across from the Sun statue and DLRC, occupying the space where two former Married Student Housing buildings currently stand. Those buildings will be demolished and a third building will be used for the construction office. This new building will provide needed laboratory space for the College of Engineering. They will be overseeing the construction in conjunction with PUPF, Jacobs Engineering (designers), and Pepper Construction (contractor). The new Flex Lab building project will begin on April 4, 2016, with the erection of the construction fence. At that time, the gravel parking lot and the A lot behind the building will close permanently. As the construction progresses, there will be other parking and road closures behind the BNC, but we have made arrangements for all types of deliveries to be made during and after construction. During the demolition process of the former Married Student Housing buildings (137, 138) it is inevitable that there will be vibration-causing work. We are to be informed of the actual dates and times of this work and will pass it along as we receive it. The impact of these activities is not known, but it must be assumed that we will not be within our current vibration criteria during work periods. The current plan is for demolition to begin April 6, 2016. Pepper Construction has given us a preliminary plan and will continue to give us updates. As always, pizza and beverages will be provided. Dr. Bursten's research starts with the basic idea that there is more to the goals of science than just describing nature. She shows how these goals influence scientific theories, concepts, and explanations. She specializes in the philosophy of nanoscience, which is a branch of chemistry and physics that has grown up around the development of practical technologies aimed at solving extra-scientific problems, including medical imaging and the energy crisis. To solve these problems, nanoscientists are synthesizing new materials with never-before-seen properties and using scientific reasoning to figure out how to manipulate and control these properties in new machines, devices, and medical therapies. Title: Boundary Work: Nanoscience Meets Philosophy Date/Time: March 23 at 5:30pm Location: MRGN 121 ABSTRACT: Nanoscience is an inherently interdisciplinary field of study. Because it developed around a scale of investigation, rather than a set of laws or phenomena, it invites research programs from fields as diverse as materials science, biology, physics, chemistry, engineering, and design. For instance, gold nano-cubes are synthesized and characterized by chemists and physicists; modeled on computers by mechanical engineers; studied for their color-changing properties in stained glass by art historians, designers, and materials scientists; and manipulated for smarter drug delivery by chemists and biologists. This scale-centric character of nanoscience means that knowledge in nanoscience is often grouped not along disciplinary lines, but rather around instrumentation techniques, around individual materials, as described above, or around particular applications. Consequently, the structure of knowledge in nanoscience is better understood as clusters of what Peter Galison has termed "trading zones," rather than a taxonomy of laws, theories, models, and heuristics. These trading zones permit contributions from diverse research perspectives-including those from history and philosophy of science. I have spent 4 years working with a nanoscience laboratory with the aim of understanding the structure of knowledge in nanoscience. Through this work I have become convinced that philosophers and historians of science can impact the development of new knowledge in nanoscience alongside practitioners in STEM fields. In this talk, I show how contributions from philosophy of science can influence research in nanoscience by describing how philosophical reflection on the concept "surface" led to reforms in experiment design in my lab. I discuss how these reforms, in conjunction with regulations on the toxicity and environmental impact of nanomaterials, can influence the development of classification systems in nanoscience.
