All User Meeting Building Closure Holiday Painting Seminar Telecommunications Upgrades Coming to Birck All User Meeting When: January 20th and 21th 7:00pm to 8:00pm Where: Lily Hall 1-105 All facility users must plan to attend either session on the 20th or 21th or your Cleanroom and Lab Access will be suspended. You must be on time and have either your Birck or Purdue ID with you for attendance purposes. Building Closure NOTICE: Upcoming building closure! The BNC will be completely closed for one day in the near future - date to be established. Only people involved in the shutdown will be allowed in the building during the shutdown. All offices, laboratories, and the cleanroom will be closed. This is an advance notice that within the next few weeks, Purdue Physical Facilities Department will be requesting an emergency power interruption to fix a high voltage power issue with our center's fire pump controller. At this time, Physical Facilities is in the process of ordering parts to complete repairs. Once parts are received and a plan of action is complete, we will send an update with a firm date and time for the power interruption. Per safety codes, power to the fire pump transfer/control was hardwired directly from the electrical substation to the fire panel when the building was constructed. This wiring bypasses our main switchboard and provides no lockout point for the fire panel. Therefore, for safety reasons the electric substation providing power to the fire pump has to be shutdown. The affected substation also supplies power to one of the building's three, 3000 amp switchboards. The Purdue Physical Facilities department anticipates the building shutdown will last from 4 to 8 hours, but this downtime is subject to change once repairs start. Only essential personnel will have access to the building during the power outage since the building will be without fire protection during that time. All CLEANROOM and LABORATORY research work will be suspended and building access closed during power outage. All exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be shut down, and chemicals inside fume hoods will need to be placed in sealed containers. General areas that will be affected by the power outage are listed below. - All chemical exhaust systems for the labs and cleanroom. - Building ambient temperature and humidity control o Offices o General laboratories o Cleanroom o Atrium - Office power and lighting (all computers will lose power) - Atrium power and lighting - Card reader system Systems NOT affected by the power outage are listed below. - Emergency power (on emergency generator power) - UPS power (on emergency generator power) - Equipment emergency power (on emergency generator power) - Cleanroom power (power from a different switchboard) - Laboratory power (power from a different switchboard) Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. This new system will use Voice Over IP (VOIP) to provide unification of phone calls, voicemail, Webex meetings, distribution control, video calls, messaging, etc. This upgrade and modernization will be led by the Purdue IT group and ECN, with lots of support from Birck building services personnel. Training on the new system will be provided. Please watch for further updates and roll-out.

Cleanroom Portable Tablet/Laptop One suggestion this week was to provide a shared hand-held electronic product to allow process notes to be downloaded in the cleanroom instead of writing them on cleanroom paper. This is an excellent idea, and we would like to discuss use scenarios with the person who suggested this so that we may choose the best solution. Please see Ron Reger at your convenience. Hot Plate Fume Containment A user pointed out that the hotplates in the lithography area sometimes produce noticeable fumes during baking and curing processes. To address this we will work with our sheet metal trades to design, fabricate, and install an exhausted hood/canopy over this area. This will perform the function of removing fumes out through the hood thus minimizing them in the work area. Once installed we will need to determine what effect, if any, the moving air caused by the slight negative pressure will have on cure times and/or process performance. =================================================== Professor Mark Lundstrom will be giving a free on-line short course, “Fundamentals of Nanotransistors” beginning in January. It is a 4-week course - stretched out to 8 weeks just to give busy people time to complete the course. The first half is about conventional MOSFET theory, which will be a review for many. The second half develops the transmission model for nano transistors, relates it to the MIT Virtual Source model, and discusses how to use the model to characterize modern transistors. The UPS Power Shutdown is Complete

All, Today's UPS shutdown is complete thanks to excellent work by the Purdue electricians. The work was completed ahead of schedule. UPS power has been restored, lab card readers are again functional, and all labs are back to normal from a supply air and exhaust perspective. A few labs remain slightly out of spec in regards to temperature, but they should recover quickly, most likely by the time you have read this email. The fume hoods should all be out of alarm by now as well. It appears we failed to communicate the impact of today's shutdown on the card reader system. None of the readers were functional during the power shutdown, and we apologize for not communicating that information ahead of time, as well as for any inconvenience this may have caused. All User Meeting When: January 20th and 21th 7:00pm to 8:00pm Where: Lily Hall 1-105 All facility users must plan to attend either session on the 20th or 21th or your Cleanroom and Lab Access will be suspended. You must be on time and have either your Birck or Purdue ID with you for attendance purposes. UPS SHUT DOWN (Uninterruptable Power Supply) On 7 January 2016 Purdue Physical Facilities will be shutting down the center's Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) power to the front half of the building. The outage is needed to add electrical capacity to the UPS distribution system. As result of this UPS interruption there is a direct impact on the building control systems resulting in shutting down HVAC and chemical exhaust systems for both east and west laboratory wings. This requires us to shut down laboratory activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gases - no chemical work will be allowed during this period. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. The UPS interruption should take from 4 to 8 hours to complete - barring any unforeseen issues. Normal power in all the laboratories will not be affected and will available during the time the UPS power is shutdown. The cleanroom UPS power will not be affected as well. Hazardous Gases Restored

Dear all Birck users, The hazardous gases have been turned back on, and the Toxic Gas Monitoring System is now in normal operation, so hazardous gas processing is available again after the long holiday shut-down. Thank you for your support during this period. Birck Engineering & Safety
