Notice - Odor in Cleanroom for HEPA Filter Repairs (9/18/14 to 9/22/14)

This week we started our cleanroom certification process. Part of this process involves challenging and testing all the cleanroom HEPA filters for damage or particle leaks. We found out we had a surprising number of damaged HEPA filters that require patching and retesting. The process involves using a silicone caulk at the location of the HEPA leak. The Silicone caulk will generate a vinegar odor in the cleanroom for couple days after the patch is applied and until outgassing stops. We plan to start patching the HEPA filters Thursday morning at 7AM taking about 2 days to complete. We hope the vinegar odor in the cleanroom will slowly dissipate over the weekend. "Nonclassical tunneling and feedback-based devices for nanoelectronics" Alex Zaslavsky Friday September 19, 2014 3:30pm PHYS 203 Modern computing and, in fact, modern civilization is based on digital switching by complementary (CMOS) field effect transistors (FETs). There is a limit on how sharply the FET current can be turned off, due to thermionic injection over a voltage-controlled potential barrier. Sharper switching, which is necessary if silicon transistor downscaling is to proceed beyond the next decade, requires transistors based on alternative physical mechanisms, such as quantum mechanical tunneling or carrier injection with positive feedback. This seminar will discuss two types of nonclassical transistor-like devices: tunneling FETs (TFETs) and feedback FETs. In the TFET arena, which is currently attracting great industrial interest, we will discuss the improvement of the transistor characteristics via the use of hetero-nanowire bandgap engineering. We then discuss the proposed bipolar enhancement of the tunneling current in a monolithic silicon-compatible structure that in simulation yields the sharpest switching performance to date. In the feedback FET arena, we discuss the Z2-FET (for zero voltage and zero impact ionization) that produces very sharp switching with controlled hysteresis in the output characteristics and holds promise for very fast and compact semiconductor memory. While these alternative devices are promising, some of the basic underlying physics - e.g. interband tunneling in indirect semiconductors - is not sufficiently understood. Still, the unique characteristics deriving from quantum mechanical tunneling and feedback make such devices an interesting playground for innovative device research, as standard silicon technology heads towards the long-predicted end of the miniaturization. *In collaboration with: Son T. Le, Peng Zhang (Brown U.); Jing Wan, S. Cristoloveanu, C. Le Royer (Minatec, Grenoble); D. E. Perea, S. A. Dayeh, and S. T. Picraux (Los Alamos). Short bio: Alex Zaslavsky received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Princeton in 1991 and was a postdoctoral scientist at IBM Yorktown until 1993. In 1994 he joined Brown University, where he is now Professor of Engineering and Physics. He was a recipient of a Sloan Fellowship, an ONR Young Investigator award, an NSF Career award, and was a visiting senior chair of excellence at the Nanosciences Foundation of Grenoble in 2009-12. He has been an editor of the Solid State Electronics international journal since 2003. He has authored over 120 journal articles and book chapters, and co-edited eight books in the microelectronics field. Research interests include tunneling- and feedback-based semiconductor devices, ultrathin semiconductor-on-insulator structures and hetero-nanowires, amorphous-oxide-based devices, and error-immune probabilistic computing. -----------------------------------------------------------

Andrew Fritts (andrew.fritts(a)thermofisher.com<mailto:andrew.fritts@thermofisher.com>) and Angie Keiser (angela.keiser(a)thermofisher.com<mailto:angela.keiser@thermofisher.com>) Preventive Maintenance Preventive Maintenance Shut Down Notice October 13 - October 17 The Brick Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing a semi-annual preventive maintenance and service shutdown October 13 through October 17, 2014. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, hazardous toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, October 13 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 17. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. No one will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 9 a.m. Monday, October 13 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 17. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical work will be allowed during this period. It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, October 17. Please check Coral for equipment status and availability. For long term research planning please refer the following future dates for our future preventive maintenance shutdowns. ? Week of May 4, 2015 ? Week of October 12, 2015 ? Week of May 2, 2016 ? Week of Oct 10, 2016 Thank you for your cooperation and understanding during these important preventive maintenance shutdowns. BNC Management Survey Results One survey respondent this week was very complimentary of our lithography and mask-making capabilities. Thank you very much for your kind words. To that end, we would like to invite all research groups to use our internal, improved mask-making facilities. We have a Heidelberg laser-writer system that is extremely capable of producing excellent masks, with the ability to go down to 1 micron feature sizes. We've gone through a learning curve bringing this instrument online . . . we had a software upgrade from Heidelberg to address some intrinsic anomalies within the system software, we have successfully developed our Genisys Beamer software platform to perform translations to .gds, and we have created the ability to remotely render Heidelberg layouts on Mike Courtney's office computer in the engineering staff area. Thus the user can approve final layouts/designs in the office without having to go into the cleanroom to seem them on the Heidelberg computer. So with these improvements we now have an outstanding mask-making resource for our internal users to take advantage of. Give us a try! Cleanroom Microscopes Both computers on our microscopes in N-Bay are no longer supported by ECN because their OS was Windows XP. Additionally they have been infected with a virus so they are both offline per ECN's direction, and photos cannot be stored as files. We have acquired two new computers that ECN will support, and we're in the process of updating our Spot Imaging software because the current version of the software is not compatible with the new operating systems on the new computers. We're also replacing one of the cameras due to its incompatible interface to the computer. We are trying to expedite this upgrade as quickly as possible through our procurement system.
