Holiday Survey Input Tote Safety Tours Holiday Purdue University is closed Monday, September 1st in observance of Labor day. Survey Input Thanks very much to the Birck user community for continuing to suggest improvements and providing constructive feedback for our cleanroom operations. Over the past 20 weeks since we started the pilot feedback program we received 106 feedback messages and we've directly addressed 19 issues in the cleanroom, some large and some small . . . . but all important. Please keep your suggestions coming! Ron Tote Safety Some users have had difficulty reaching cleanroom totes stored on the upper racks. We will be purchasing a safe step stool for use near the tote racks. Please be safe when removing and replacing totes. Tours Friday, September 5th there will be a tour of 20 Academic Advisors at 1:00 pm.

7+1 BRK updates: reorganization and opportunities to showcase your research

Dear all, With the start of the new semester, I would like to take the opportunity to outline a series of updates at BRK. Specifically: 1. We have reorganized our staff leadership team with updated roles and responsibilities to better serve the end users and support strategic growth for our center. The attached pdf outlines these changes. 2. We are in the middle of re-organizing our bio-safety protocols and operations. Instead of having a bio-safety officer, we will form a common safety committee with Bindley and will place our operations directly under the supervision of Bob Golden (REM Biological Safety Officer) in the same way as all other university units have done. I will email separately faculty working in the bio area to discuss the details of this re-organization. After this is completed the Bindley and BRK sites will have the same biosafety protocols. 3. We are designing a BRK Open House day for all internal and external researchers. All recharge centers will be part of the Open House, but we would very much welcome participation from students/postdocs/researchers/faculty to help showcase your research area. The first one will be in February 2015. Ideas and contributions are welcome. 4. We are creating a Wikipedia article for BRK. We would love to include your research area. Please send me a paragraph of your research area so we can integrate it with the rest of the write up. Please send this to me by: September 22nd, 2014. 5. We are updating all research areas on our website. The ones listed now are outdated. We plan to use the info above to also update our website. 6. We have now finished installing the big screens around BRK. We would love to show images, videos, presentations, etc. from your research. Please upload anything you would like to share in these big screens at: http://eng.purdue.edu/jump/b008ac. Log in with career account and password, then add files under the Display Information folder we have made. All BRK faculty have access to this. While free formatting will be accepted, I have attached an example slide that you may use as a template to provide a more unified BRK theme. This is available immediately and we are eager to receive your contributions. 7. We have now been running our pilot feedback system for 5 months. During this time, we received 106 feedback messages in 20 weeks and we directly addressed 19 issues in the lab. We are very thankful for your feedback. As always, please check the Friday memo for responses to issues that you bring up. We plan to expand this system to include the whole facility but we would like your input on how to best do this. Please talk or email either Ron or me with regards to this. Finally, I will be representing Discovery Park and BRK in the Purdue new faculty orientation on Thursday August 21, 1.30-2.30pm, PMU South Ballroom. If you know of new faculty at Purdue interested in Discovery Park/BRK, please encourage them to visit our booth. As always, comments are welcome. Happy to discuss in person as well. Survey Feedback Cleanroom Microscopes One request we received this week involved providing a 5X objective on another cleanroom microscope to enable more 5X capability. This is an excellent input, based upon actual use scenarios in the cleanroom. We will work with Nikon to quote the 5X objective for the Nikon microscope on the left side in the photo bay. Additionally we will work with ECN and our staff members to upgrade the computers so that image capture is similar on both microscope/computer systems. FIB Manipulator Tips A survey comment noted that there was a period of time when manipulator tips for the FIB were unavailable. There were two issues/questions regarding this . . . (1) why didn't we order one when we installed the last one in stock, and (2) why is it taking so long to receive an order? We have looked at the process of ordering tips, and have now changed it to trigger an order based on the average lifetime of tips. This will allow adequate lead-time for ordering a new one to have it available here at Birck when the last one needs to be replaced. Additionally, we ordered the tips from a company who is was not in our new purchasing system so we had a delay in getting the business transactions properly set up in our system. We believe this to be fixed now as well. The tip vendor has told us to expect the tip order to arrive next week. Compliments for Staff One survey response had very positive compliments for several engineering staff members regarding their deep skill and expertise, their willingness to help research projects, and their support for research after-hours. The staff really appreciates this positive reinforcement as well as the suggestions for improvement. We consider the users here at Birck our 'customers' and it is our responsibility to support and enable the wide variety of research done here at our great facility. Solar Seminar Series Summer 2014 Photovoltaic Seminar series Graham 'Gus' Nathan Director, Centre for Energy Technology, The University of Adelaide , Australia August 14, Thursday, 10:30 AM DIRECT HYBRIDS BETWEEN SOLAR THERMAL AND GASIFICATION PROCESSES Abstract: The seminar will describe the advantages of directly integrating concentrating solar thermal with combustion and auto thermal gasification processes for liquid fuels production and power generation. It will also outline three novel classes of technology to achieve this, namely a hybrid solar receiver combustor for application in high temperature cavity receivers, in twin-bed hybrid solar gasification, which offers increased syngas yield and quality relative to conventional auto-thermal gasification and lower CO2 emissions, and in a hybrid solar chemical-looping-combustion concept, which offers a 60% solar share in a gas-turbine-combined-cycle. The presentation will highlight the need to fully account for the intermittent nature of the solar resource through pseudo-dynamic modelling of the full process for solar hybrid liquid fuels production via syngas and show how this variability can be accommodated through hybrids. It will explore a range of technology options, from 100% solar, via the Batch reactor developed at ETH Zurich, through to various options for hybridization, including dual bed gasification. Preliminary estimates of the cost of production will also be presented. Finally, it will explain how these novel hybrid technology concepts bring with them the need for new detailed understanding of the complex and coupled processes between high flux radiation and turbulent multi-phase and/or reacting flows. Bio: Professor Nathan is the founding Director of the University of Adelaide's Centre for Energy Technology and recipient of an ARC Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award. With more than $20m of research funding, he works with energy technologies spanning the combustion of fossil and bio-fuels, concentrated solar thermal, geothermal energy, wind power, energy storage and in hybrid technologies. He works closely with industry both in developing novel technologies and in identifying and addressing key research challenges, especially those that can be addressed with advanced laser diagnostics. His past technology developments include being principal leader of the Chief Design Team for the award winning fuel and combustion system for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Relay Torch and joint leadership of the development of low NOx combustion technology in rotary cement kilns. He has published widely, with more than 120 publications in leading journals, 200 in peer-review conferences and 10 patents.

As a reminder, all users are responsible for cleaning up after themselves and for leaving their work areas ready for use by others. Effective immediately, if any user is observed leaving a mess in a hood or near equipment, or leaving an unattended tote not in its proper storage location, they will be subjected to mandatory participation in weekly cleanings for one month, or a one-week suspension of all cleanroom privileges. Wang Hall Parking As we near the completion of Wang Hall, I would like to review the parking lot regulations we have going forward. The Wang Hall lot is for authorized personnel only. All students and faculty are required to park in the parking garage or other designated areas outside the lot. Vendors and contractors will be allowed to park by permit only. Patrons of the future retail space will be allowed to park in the lot for up to one hour. Our team will be monitoring this every work day to insure every authorized person will have a place to park. If we find unauthorized vehicles, we will tag them and document the license plate. The next time we will have it towed. With the school year beginning, please help us by advising all your staff and students to follow the guidelines going forward. Our goal is to keep your building running smoothly and making the tenants and patrons experience here a positive one. Yesterday at the Birck Nanotechnology Center, the Discovery Park community witnessed several exciting research posters by summer undergrad student researchers engaged with tackling real world challenges in several research groups within Discovery Park research centers.
