Electrical Shutdown Maintenance Medical Plan Presentations (2014) Parking Purchasing **Electrical Shutdown** During the semiannual PM shutdown there will be several electrical shutdowns to make tie-ins for the laboratory expansion projects. Please be aware of these shutdowns and arrange your schedule accordingly. The most significant shutdown will take place Tuesday, 8 Oct 2013, from 7:30 am - 8:30 am. During this shutdown, power will be off to most of the offices on the west side of the building - including lighting. Please power down computers and other critical office equipment prior to the shutdown. Additionally, other important building functions may be affected: * ITAP computer closets - it is possible that the entire building will lose the computer network during that time * West door to the building - the door will lock down * Card Reader system - this shutdown may affect the card reader system, and therefore access to the laboratories * Elevators - the elevators will be locked down on the first floor * Fire panels - we may hear the trouble alarm in the atrium * Convenience outlets in the west galleys * Atrium lighting - some or all of the lights in the atrium may be affected Please note that we are depending on the building drawings and panel schedule for this information. While we believe these to be correct, there is always the possibility that the contractor who built the building made a mistake on a panel schedule and an unforeseen area may lose power. Monday, 7 October 2013 (afternoon) and Wednesday, 9 October 2013 (morning) some of the power for emergency lighting will be shut down for 1-hour periods. This will not have a significant effect, but you may see lights shutting off during those times. Please note that the normal PM communicated previously will be going on during these shutdowns. Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation during these shutdown events. John Weaver Mark Voorhis Facility Manager Building Manager **Maintenance** The Birck Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing a semi-annual preventive maintenance and service shutdown October 7 through October 11, 2013. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, October 7 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 11. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. No one will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 9 a.m. Monday, October 7 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 11. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical work will be allowed during this period. It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, October 11. Please check Coral for equipment status and availability. Due to the new lab expansion projects electrical outages are required that will mainly affect the office areas. We will send out a notice with a date and time of the power outage when we have more detailed information from Physical Facilities. For long term research planning please refer the following future dates for our future preventive maintenance shutdowns. * Week of May 5, 2014 (Possible power outage of lab research tools) * Week of October 13, 2014 * Week of May 4, 2015 * Week of October 12, 2015 * Week of May 2, 2016 Thank you for your cooperation and understanding during these important preventive maintenance shutdowns. BNC Management **2014 Medical Plan Presentations** OVPR/DP will offer two sessions to explain the 2014 medical plan options. Each session will last approximately 90 minutes and will include a presentation by Benefits along with a question and answer session. Please plan to attend, if possible. Monday, October 14, 2-3:30pm, MRGN 121 "Health Care: Moving Forward in 2014" reviews dynamics affecting Purdue's medical plans, highlights Purdue's proactive steps to control costs while continuing to provide high-quality, affordable health care for faculty and staff, and gives an overview of all three 2014 medical plan options. Wednesday, October 23, 9-10:30am, MRGN 121 "Is a High-Deductible Medical Plan Your Best Choice?" covers how a high-deductible medical plan with a health savings account (HSA) works. The session explores questions people commonly have when considering a move to a high-deductible medical plan and looks at the advantages of an HSA. If you are not able to attend these sessions, Benefits will add recorded versions of these presentations to their website this week. Dr. Michael Lilly Sandia National Laboratory "Manipulating single electrons in semiconductor devices for quantum computing" Friday October 04, 2013 3:30pm PHYS 203 Refreshments are served at 3:00 p.m. in Physics room 242. Semiconductor nanoelectronic devices can be combined, or integrated, in a variety of ways to control single electrons and form a qubit. In a qubit, the quantum mechanical properties of a two-level system serve as the basic component of a quantum computer. In our group, we have focused on silicon devices where electrons are confined in either quantum dots or single donor atoms. One approach is to use the spin of two electrons in a double quantum dot. Results on Pauli spin blockade for MOS double dots will be presented. Another approach to make a qubit is using to the spin of a single electron. Pulsed measurements are used for electrical spin readout. Using such pulsing techniques, we have measure the energy relaxation time of a single electron spin in silicon and find T1 lifetimes exceeding 1 second.
