Pathak, PhD Depts. of Radiology, Biomedical and Electrical Engineering, The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, The Institute for NanoBioTechnology, The Institute for Computational Medicine The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Abstract: This lecture will highlight how interdisciplinary research at the interface of engineering, medicine, and design provides insights into disease, enables biomarker discovery, and impacts health and society. I will describe how my biomedical engineering journey began with the development of a globally used clinical biomarker of brain cancer. Next, I will illustrate how recent advances in software, hardware, and "wetware" tools are ushering in a new era of "image-based" systems biology. Examples will include the use of multimodality imaging in conjunction with novel computational and visualization tools that have revolutionized our understanding of cancer and other diseases. I will also showcase the design of novel miniaturized microscopes for imaging brain function in freely moving animals, as well as the development of a new multiscale imaging pipeline for vascular systems biology. During the second half of this lecture, I will share my vision of how we can leverage the Weldon School's legacy of impactful research, innovation and education to make it a crucible of "transformative biomedical engineering" for every Weldon student, faculty and staff member. I will share how we can empower our faculty, students and staff to face tomorrow's challenges by capitalizing on what makes the Weldon School unique; leveraging Purdue's exceptional resources, as well as marshalling new resources to enhance Research, Education and Community within the Weldon School. Collectively, these efforts will ensure that our community and the Weldon School thrive well into the future. Bio: Dr. Pathak (www.pathaklab.org) is a biomedical engineer, and award-winning educator and mentor whose mission is to "transform lives via the power of images". He received a BS in Electronics Engineering from the University of Poona, India. He received his PhD in Functional Imaging from the joint Biomedical Engineering program between the Medical College of Wisconsin and Marquette University, where he was a Whitaker Foundation Fellow. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Molecular Imaging in the Dept. of Radiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. At Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Pathak is a Full Professor in the Schools of Medicine (Depts. of Radiology and Oncology) and Engineering (Depts. of Biomedical and Electrical Engineering). He is also a member of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Institute for NanoBioTechnology, and the Institute for Computational Medicine. He is a globally recognized expert on biomedical imaging, with a distinguished track-record of interdisciplinary research and collaboration that includes continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and private foundations, technology patents, partnerships with startups, scholarly contributions to biomedical engineering textbooks, and publications in journals such as Nature Methods and Nature Reviews Cancer. His interdisciplinary research has been recognized by numerous awards such as the Bill Negendank Award for "outstanding investigators in cancer imaging" from the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) and the Career Catalyst Award from the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Dr. Pathak serves in leadership roles for multiple imaging initiatives and professional societies, reviews for national and international funding agencies, and serves on journal editorial boards. He was the Chair of the Cancer Section for the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, served on the Executive Council of the Microcirculatory Society, and was the Chair of the NIH's Emerging Imaging Technologies in Neuroscience (EITN) study section. He has taught at multiple institutions in the US as well as overseas, and has mentored over 100 award-winning (e.g. Fulbright and Howard Hughes Fellows) students, staff and junior faculty. He has served on multiple diversity initiatives and is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of thought leaders in biomedical engineering. He has been the recipient of the ISMRM's Outstanding Teacher Award, and was recognized as a 125 Hopkins Hero by the School of Medicine for his "outstanding dedication to its core values of teaching, research and clinical care." ~Dr. Pathak is a candidate for the Dane A.
