However, there remain a number of patients for whom these treatments are ineffective. In this talk, medical imaging will be used to study these therapies and provide insight relating to why they might be ineffective in some patients but successful in others. The talk will include two sections: 1) application of existing medical imaging methods to improve therapy and 2) development of new medical imaging methods. It will focus on application of PET and MRI techniques. Bio: Dr. Matthew Scarpelli is an Assistant Professor within the School of Health Sciences at Purdue University. He obtained a B.S.E. degree in Nuclear Engineering and Radiologic Sciences from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. degree in Medical Physics from the University of Wisconsin. He did his postdoctoral work at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix Arizona. As a faculty at Purdue, his lab utilizes radiation as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool to treat disease. The lab is specifically interested in the interplay between radiation and the immune system. Studies aim to elucidate mechanisms of radiation induced immune suppression/ stimulation as well as develop new imaging techniques for assessing the immune system. ~BME Faculty Hosts: Drs.
