Dear BME Graduate Students, I want to personally welcome you to the Fall Semester 2021. There’s a number of new developments in the grad program moving forward to better support training, community, and interactions with faculty and other members of the school. I got to meet some of you for the first time this past week during orientation and I look forward to seeing you develop over the coming years as Master’s and PhD students. I also wanted to re e-introduce you to Dr. Tami Ursem- Associate Head for Academic Affairs, Mike Heinz, the Director of Graduate programs, Jackie Linnes- the Chair of the DEI committee, and Doug Brubaker- the faculty advisor to the BME GSA. From this group we have a number of items we will discuss more soon and set up through the fall and spring terms that have a focus on Graduate student programs, community, and life. We will want your input and engagement! I also wanted to highlight a couple of upcoming events- Please be sure to join us for Ice Cream this week, on Friday at 1:00PM in the MJIS South Lawn (details were in the other earlier email). I wanted to also provide more details about the upcoming opportunity to meet some alumni and members of the Purdue Advisory board. Late in the afternoon on September 24th, there will be an event in the afternoon to honor the previous School Head Dr. Wodicka. As part of the event a number of former BMEs and others will give brief remarks that touch on some of the history of this School and immediately following the talks, we will be having the first “Art of Research” Exhibit. The Art of Research Exhibit will be from about 4:30-6:00 PM in the MJIS Atrium and the goal is to creatively highlight your research in a visually arresting way. This will also be a great opportunity to communicate your work to other students, faculty, visiting Alumni, and members of the Advisory Board. We are working on the logistics for the event still- but there will be food, beverages, etc. provided and I really hope that many of you can join this fun event! The outlines of categories were sent out earlier- but I’m including them here again at the bottom of this email to remind you of how to develop these- Graduate student Art of Research Exhibit Categories • Microscopy (Under the microscope) • Modeling (Mesmerizing models) • Rendering • Hand drawn • Device design • Anatomy and physiology Submission requirements (Submit on or before September 15, 2021- We need time to print and to vote on the categories!) (Link will be sent later for submission): • Upload high-resolution image files (photographs, micrographs, illustrations, visualizations, renderings) (300dpi or higher). (Link will be sent later) • Name of individual(s) who created the image • Affiliation with Weldon School (graduate student/undergraduate student/postdoc…) • Image title up to 50 characters long • Description of how image was created (including type of instrument/software/media used) • Image caption: 100 words or less, written layman’s terms without scientific jargon. The caption should answer questions about what the image depicts, how it was created, and provide an interesting fact about the depiction and/or how the image represents important to your research or to the field more generally • Permission from all individuals who created the image to reprint and share your entry David M.
